Do you revile people who gave your women refuge,

while you, son of Yarbūʿ, crouch under oppression?

We sheltered the son of Yarbūʿ from oppression after

Mālik made you drink from the cup of humiliation and oppression,

on the morning Mālik wanted us to consign you

to abasement as long as the scouring winds blow.

So you sought refuge in al-Ribāb's encampments, and you were

like truffles in floodwater hollows swept along by hooves.

And at al-ʿArḍ, when hosts came, having gathered

at Sajḥah, led by ruinous fancies,

we left them slain, as though their backs

were draped in shaggy rugs of fresh, bloody spear-wounds.

So we drove them back and frightened your brother; thus there were

hands from them for you, and hands interlocked.

Just as most of your host recoiled from Mālik,

on al-Ḥimā's plain and the plateau, under successive spear-thrusts.

How, then, can one revile Taym when he was sheltered by

    Taym's horsemen and interlocking spears?

Taym's defense of you is confirmed, when they claim kinship

with glory, by the relentless raids of al-Kulāb.

High-nosed nobles raised me to the crest and the heights,

and mine, within Tamīm, are its head and withers.

There, the son of Taym is central among them in lineage,

and you, son of Yarbūʿ, are a substitute who stands apart.

And on the day of lowland Irāb, the day you were taken captive,

a swift oncoming host overwhelmed you, sons of Yarbūʿ.

The sons of mighty Taghlib went off one evening

with your women; the javelins did not protect them.

And because of Haramī, shame has shrouded

your faces, for as long as poetry has a weaver.

And you surrendered Sufyān to the enemy by force,

even had the bit-champing mares summoned for aid caught up.

And at al-ʿAkin, the Kalbite disgraced your women,

when the fair women among them, loathing their husbands, called

to Salīṭ, asking you to bring them down, after

the streaming tears had flowed from them in anguish.

And ʿAmr son of ʿAmr led you—so thank him—

at Dhū Najab, while the host stumbled and knelt.

At Dhū Najab, had you not been defended from behind

by the sons of Mālik, the entangling perils there would have destroyed you.

So you abandoned Saʿd's horsemen, though one could already see

in your homeland the doomed women carried off behind riders.

And on the day al-Ḥawfazān's battalion ascended

Jadūd, with paths toward you from the direction of Ḥajr.

And on the day of Baḥīr, you were the worst band,

mere lackeys, but for al-Māzinī, the fighter.

And on the day of the sons of ʿAbs at Sharj, joint witness was borne

to his killing by your peaks and the low hillocks.

And ʿAbqar, when she called you, clothed you

in shame, in the robe of women in their menstrual courses.

    بِها مِن مَنيِّ العَبدِ أَسوَدُ حالِكُ

    Yarbūʿ will wipe its base moustaches;

on them lies a pitch-black stain from the slave's semen.
