دَعَوتَYou summoned وُجوديmy being حَيثُwhere ماnot ثَمَّthere داعِياa caller
سِواكَother than You وَقَدand indeed وَفَّرتَYou made abundant فِيَّwithin me الدَواعِياthe promptings
You called my being forth, where there was no caller
I called upon your existence wherever there was a caller
but You, and You made the promptings within me abundant.
Other than You, and You had instilled many incentives in me
وَقُلتَand You said لِيَto me اِدعُcall upon اللَهَGod حَيثُsince هُوَHe الَّذيthe One who
دَعانيcalled me فَأَنّىso how لاnot يُجيبُdoes He answer دُعائِياmy prayer
And You told me, “Call upon God,” for He is the One
And You said to me, “Call upon Allah wherever He is the One
who called me—how, then, could He not answer my prayer?
Who called me, so how would He not answer my call?”
وَهاand here أَناI أَدعوهُcall upon Him بُعَيدَjust after دُعائِهِHis call
جَزاءًa recompense وِفاقاًfitting لاnot عَلَيَّagainst me وَلاand not لِياfor me
And here I am, calling upon Him just after His call,
And here I am, calling upon Him after His call
a fitting recompense, neither against me nor for me.
In reciprocation, neither upon me nor for me,
فَإِنso if هُوَHe فَضلاًby grace قَدindeed أَجابَhas answered فَجودُهُthen His bounty
هُوَit الغَيثُthe rain يَهميpours down بِالمَكارِمِwith noble gifts وافِياin full measure
So if, by grace, He has answered, then His bounty
For if He has answered out of His overflowing generosity
is rain, pouring down noble gifts in full measure.
He is the downpour that pours with noble deeds in abundance

Yet it is Him I hope for, and through the one
Moreover, I hope in Him, and in the One
who is the gate for seekers, I have come to present myself.
Who is the door for seekers - I came compatible

He is the Chosen One, the treasure of purity, the mine of fidelity,
He is Al-Mustafa, treasure of purity, source of loyalty
the radiance of being chosen, from whom comes the secret of my purity,
Our exemplar of noble choosing, from whom my purity flows

our means of approach before the Almighty; and indeed he
And our means with the Almighty - and He
is the supreme mercy, through a divine outpouring.
Is the Greatest Mercy, by the grace of the Divine

Through him I sought access to Him, and by his standing
I used him as my intercession with Him, and by his stature
I sought intercession with the Lord through the best of patrons.
I interceded with the Master, the best of intercessors
فَياso O رَبِّmy Lord حَظّيmy share بِالنَوائِبِin calamities قَدindeed رَباhas grown
وَكَدَّرَand clouded شربيmy drink بَعدَafter أَنthat كانَit was صافِياclear
So, O my Lord, my share of calamities has grown,
So my Lord, my share of tribulations has been plentiful
and has clouded my drink after it had been clear.
And made my drink bitter after it was pure
وَمِنand from شاهِقٍa lofty height أَيديhands اِمتِحانِكَYour testing بيwith me رمتhurled

And from a lofty height the hands of Your testing have hurled me
And from towering trials, Your hands threw me down
to the lowest, sunken depth of my affliction.
To the lowest, most despicable place of my affliction
وَمَهماand whenever أَرُمI seek بِالإِمتِحانِthrough testing تَقَدُّماًadvancement

And whenever I seek, through trial, to advance
And however much I am thrown by trials towards
toward nearness to You, sorrow calls me from behind me.
Closeness to You, sorrow called to me from behind me
تَمَزّقَwas torn ثَوبُthe garment الصَبرِpatience أَيَّwhat utter تَمَزُّقٍtearing

The garment of patience has been torn—utterly torn!
The garment of patience tore - what tearing!
and my patches fell short, for I found no mender.
And my resources narrowed where I was not accustomed to having a stitcher
وَقَدand indeed لَسَعَتنيhave stung me مِنfrom زَمانيmy time أَراقِمٌspeckled serpents

And speckled serpents of my time have stung me
And my times have stung me with the poison
with the venom of harm, unjustly, and I found no healer by incantation.
Of harm, unjustly, and I did not find an antidote
فَإِنso if كانَit is لاnot يَرجوhopes for العَطاbounty غَيرُother than طائِعٍan obedient person

So if only the obedient hope for bounty,
For if none but the compliant may hope for gifts
then who has the generosity to give to a sinner?
Then who has generosity that they may grant the disobedient?
إِلَهيmy God إِلَهيmy God لَيسَis not إِلّاكَexcept You يُرتَجَىhoped for

My God, my God, none but You is looked to in hope.
My God, my God - there is none but You to hope in
And by Your truth, I have come to none but You in hope.
And by Your right, I have never focused on other than You, hoping

And who is there to whom I may complain of my grievous poverty,
And who is there to whom I may complain of the wretchedness of my poverty
and who knows my wretched state before the complaint?
And who knows, before I complain, the wretchedness of my condition?
لَقَدindeed دَكَّhas crushed دَهريmy days طَودَthe mountain of صَبريmy patience فَأَصبَحتso became

Indeed, my days have crushed the mountain of my patience, and now
Indeed, the passage of time has shaken the pillars of my patience, so the dwellings
the chambers of my palace stand empty because of calamities.
Of my palace have become desolate with disasters
وَفَوَّقَand nocked لِيagainst me الخَطبُcalamity المُبَرِّحُharrowing أَسهُماًarrows

And dire events have shot me with arrows
of anguish and torment, amid which it has hurled me.

And it launched raids against me, charging; and now
So my Lord, a servant has none in the world of means
the assailants rush upon me with the onslaught of injustice.
Other than You, so I plead being a supplicant
فَياso O رَبِّmy Lord ماnot لِلعَبدِfor the servant فيin الدَهرِtime مُلتَجىًa refuge

Save him with kindness, aid him with wishes
but You; so I seek refuge in humble supplication.

Rescue him with gentle favors, and grant him his wishes;
And shake the mountains of disasters upon the descent
and graciously fulfill his hopes before You.
