You are sweet to me, O unveiled full moon,

Since my heart became your sky.

Every beauty that shines forth unveiled

    Is borrowed from your radiance.

And through it the love-enthralled heart

Vanished from existence in love's ecstasy.

And he who was slain sang

In love: 'My soul be your ransom!'

Being despoiled in love is sweet to me,

    O radiant full moon.

You are a paradise for my heart,

Though it is in a blazing fire.

How wondrous! Though it is in bliss,

It burns in the fuel-fed fire.

You are within it, while it, like a shadow,

    Circles, seeking your favor.

    Every beauty that has appeared

From the splendor of beauty's essence,

    In Sulayma or in Su'da,

And thus grew radiant with beauty—

No lover ever beheld its manifestation

    In a full-figured or a bashful maiden,

    Shining like a lamp, without

    Seeing you in its mirrors.

O springtime of the heart, might it not

Be permitted for my eye to behold you?

If you are revealed to the heart,

Who will grant my eye the sight of you?

Then be gracious to my hearing,

After the fetters have been loosed,

    Saying, 'Welcome, welcome!'

My whole being listening to your call.

And may blessings be upon the Chosen One,

    Then greetings of peace,

From our Lord, mighty and exalted,

    And upon his noble family,

For as long as al-Yafi remains love-enthralled,

Singing from the burning heat of rejection:

'O crescent that shines forth unveiled,

    Above a bough of arak!'
