We have nothing but sorrows; in every stirring, stillness.

And we have madness in many forms; wherever we are, it is there.

    O lovesick one who

follows the love of youthful dalliance,

breathe in through us the sweet perfume

that has wafted from the valley of al-Jahun.

How many a lovesick one has grown drunk on our wine! Hasten, if you wish:

You will drink pure, reviving wine; all things lie in drinking it.

For how often, how often, in our litany have our roses’ fragrances wafted!

And the clouds of our bliss poured down from the heights of ceaseless outpouring.

And ours are stairways of ascent in love for the gazelles of the dune.

Indeed, annihilation is abiding itself; through it our eyes have found delight.

Turn toward us—may I be your ransom—and leave off sloth and languor.

And efface yourself wholly beyond ‘I’; keep to the sanctuary of stillness’s abode.
