We, a delegation seeking hospitality, have alighted at the tents.

O father of the noble prophets, peace be upon you!

    عامِلُ الشَوقِ جَرَّها أَجساما

    We made for the shrine's opening as hearts;

longing's force drew them along as bodies.

Thus they were welcomed at the station of the Father

of Guests, seeking him, not food or water.

So we took the station as a place of prayer,

and touched the shrine's corner in ritual salutation.

Then we circled the corner of the Kaaba of your resting place,

in the arrival circumambulation, hastening and standing.

And with our greetings of peace to you, we pray

where long ago you were the people's imam.

    I have entered a secure sanctuary—glad tidings

for my entrance into the Station of Abraham!

Whoever dwells within his refuge, though once fair game,

becomes forbidden to the hand of treacherous killing.

Longing caught us there; thus Time can no longer

inflict deep wounds upon us in its hunt.

The awe of arrival overtook us, and we glimpsed

from him, before the hospitality, bounty and a smile.

A cheerful welcome probed the wound in a lovesick heart,

which Time's bow had grievously wounded with arrows.

And he hoped for gracious hospitality when he offered

you verse, and sought order from you.

How could the dot of ghayn not be effaced, when

you lifted the veil from the face of the encounter?

And we see the robe of acceptance shine forth

from the heaven of an intimate friendship exalted in rank.

How could the fire of my anguish's Nimrod not become

through you coolness and peace within my breast?

Succor, succor, O you who are succor—

nay, rain, gentle and freely flowing!

You guard the right of refuge and protect the pledge

of the delegation who entrusted their protection to you.

You suffice me as I turn to you; thus 'No,' I have

said to whoever sought an aim in anyone but you.

O father of the prophets, peace be upon you,

from a lover whose passion for you has grown.

He made pilgrimage to you in longing, and upon you he

has now invoked blessings, and fasted from all but union.

And prayer's gifts are followed by the return

of our salutation upon you in peace,

and upon your noble family, those of the cave,

guardians of the sanctuary through bounty and the sword,

as long as a breath of fragrant flowers wafts from the garden

of your resting place, bringing lavender's fragrance.

We kissed the thresholds when we found

in their dust the musk of acceptance as a final seal.
