Revolve for us in the taverns of union.

تجلّت بالمحاسن والدلال

تجلّت بالمحاسن والدلال

The bride of nearness, on beauty's horizon,

The bride of nearness in the horizon of beauty

Revealed herself in charms and coquetry.

Appeared with charms and coquetry

وسعدي لاح إذ تجلى سعادي

وسعدي لاح إذ تجلى سعادي

وتجلو بالتداني قلب صادي

وتجلو بالتداني قلب صادي

And my good fortune shone when my Suʿad appeared.

And my happiness shone when my happiness was revealed

And through nearness she brightens a thirsty one's heart.

And it was revealed through approaching a barren heart

بحقّ العهد منُّوا يا ندامَى

بحقّ العهد منُّوا يا ندامَى

وصبّوا بالكؤوس لي المداما

وصبّوا بالكؤوس لي المداما

By the covenant's sanctity, be generous, O drinking companions,

With the right of the covenant, be forgiving, O penitents

And pour me the wine in cups.

And pour in the cups for me the wine

فمسك الوصل كان لها ختاما

فمسك الوصل كان لها ختاما

وحالي حالَ من فرط انتحالي

وحالي حالَ من فرط انتحالي

For the musk of union was its seal.

For the union of musk had an end

And my state has changed from my excessive wasting away.

And my state is the state of one overwhelmed by my state

ووجدي موقدٌ نار الفؤاد

ووجدي موقدٌ نار الفؤاد

متى ألقى بتقريبي مرادي

متى ألقى بتقريبي مرادي

And my longing kindles the heart's fire.

And my love a kindled fire of the heart

When, by being brought near, will I attain my desire?

When will I attain my desire through my approach?

ألا يا أيّها الساقي ترفقْ

ألا يا أيّها الساقي ترفقْ

وأترع للشجيْ الكأسَ المروّقْ

وأترع للشجيْ الكأسَ المروّقْ

Ah, O cupbearer, be gentle,

Oh o enchanter, be gentle

And fill the cup of clarified wine to the brim for the sorrowful one.

And slacken for the ardent the polished cup

أنا الصبّ الّذي للحسن يعشق

أنا الصبّ الّذي للحسن يعشق

وحالي فيك يغني عن مقالي

وحالي فيك يغني عن مقالي

I am the lovesick lover who adores beauty.

I am the one passionately in love with beauty

And my state in loving you makes my words needless.

And my state in you makes my words redundant

وقد عفت الكرى ونما سهادي

وقد عفت الكرى ونما سهادي

ومن وجدي عفت نفسي لزادي

ومن وجدي عفت نفسي لزادي

And I have shunned slumber, and my sleeplessness has grown.

And estrangement has chastened me and my slumber has increased

And from my longing, my soul has come to loathe my food.

And from my love my soul has chastened itself for its provision

فماذا حيلتي كيف احتيالي

فماذا حيلتي كيف احتيالي

وطال بحبّ من أهوى مطالي

وطال بحبّ من أهوى مطالي

What, then, is my recourse? How can I devise a way?

So what can I do, how can I scheme?

And my waiting has grown long in love for the one I adore.

And my longing for the one I love has prolonged my hopes

متى أشفى من الداء العضال

متى أشفى من الداء العضال

بحبّي للغواني والغوالي

بحبّي للغواني والغوالي

When will I be healed of the intractable malady

When will I recover from the tenacious sickness

Brought on by my love for fair maidens and cherished ones?

With my love for the coquettish and the coquettish?

أنا والحبّ يا أهل الوداد

أنا والحبّ يا أهل الوداد

ضلالي في الهوى عين الرشاد

ضلالي في الهوى عين الرشاد

Love and I, O people of affection—

I and love, O people of affection

My straying in passion is right guidance itself.

My misguidance in passion is the eye of guidance

على طه المفدّى ذي الرساله

على طه المفدّى ذي الرساله

صلاتي ما حلا ذكر الجلاله

صلاتي ما حلا ذكر الجلاله

Upon Taha, for whom one would offer ransom, bearer of the message,

Upon Taha the intercessor of the message

May my blessing rest, as long as remembrance of Divine Majesty is sweet.

My prayers, how excellent is the mention of his majesty

ويتبعها سلامٌ عمّ آله

ويتبعها سلامٌ عمّ آله

وأصحاباً رقوا رُتَبَ الكمال

وأصحاباً رقوا رُتَبَ الكمال

And may peace follow it, embracing all his family,

And it is followed by a greeting encompassing his family

And companions who ascended the ranks of perfection,

And companions who climbed the ranks of perfection

مدى الأزمان ما قد هام شادي

مدى الأزمان ما قد هام شادي

بذكراهم وما قد سار حادي

بذكراهم وما قد سار حادي

Throughout the ages, as long as a singer is enraptured

As long as times continue, my joy

By remembering them, and as long as a chanting camel-driver journeys.

In remembering them and my guidance in remembering them
