1. تجلّي حبيب الأرواح

    قبل بزوغ الفجر

    The manifestation of the beloved of souls

    before the break of dawn.

  2. قامت بقلبي الأفراح

    وقد تسامى سكري

    Joys arose within my heart,

    and my intoxication had soared.

  3. دارت علينا الأقداح

    من خمرة البكري

    The goblets circulated among us,

    filled with al-Bakri's wine,

  4. بطيب نشرٍ فوّاح

    حاكي ليالي القدر

    with a sweet, wafting fragrance

    resembling the Nights of Decree.

  5. شربت منها كأسا

    وزدت فوق الكاس

    I drank a cup of it,

    and took more beyond that cup.

  6. ولي فؤادٌ أمسى

    يتيه بين الناس

    And I have a heart that has come

    to strut among the people.

  7. دخلت حيّا حرسا

    من سطوة الوسواس

    I entered a dwelling-place guarded

    against the whisperer's onslaught.

  8. فيه الحمام النوّاح

    غنّى دجا والقمري

    There the lamenting doves

    sang in the darkness, and the turtledove too.

  9. لمّا سقاني الساقي

    تجلّى لي بالقرب

    When the cupbearer gave me drink,

    he revealed himself to me in nearness.

  10. فقلت للعشّاق

    آن أوان الشرب

    So I said to the lovers:

    The time for drinking has come.

  11. من كان مثلي راقي

    في حبّه للحبّ

    Whoever, like me, ascends

    in his love for the beloved

  12. يكتم جميع الأجراح

    في عسره واليسر

    conceals every wound

    in his hardship and in ease.
