O you with languid eyelids, you have tormented a heart

O tormentor of my eyelids, you have tortured a heart

That has never spent a night free of love for you.

That has never been empty of love for you, not for an instant

فتلطّف بجسم صبٍّ نحيلٍ

فتلطّف بجسم صبٍّ نحيلٍ

كان قبل الهوى قويّاً سويّا

كان قبل الهوى قويّاً سويّا

So be gentle with the body of a frail, lovesick lover,

So have mercy on a wasting body

Which, before love, was strong and sound.

That before love was strong and healthy

لا تحارب بناظريك فؤادي

لا تحارب بناظريك فؤادي

فلقد مات بعد أن كان حيّا

فلقد مات بعد أن كان حيّا

Do not wage war on my heart with your two eyes,

Do not war against my heart with your eyes

For it has died after having been alive.

For it is dead after once being alive

وانهَ عينيك عن تغالب صبري

وانهَ عينيك عن تغالب صبري

فضعيفان يغلبان قويّا

فضعيفان يغلبان قويّا

And forbid your two eyes to contend with my patience,

And spare my patience the assault of your eyes

For two weak ones overcome a strong one.

For the weak can overcome the strong
