Indeed, my wounded heart was intimately addressed in the unseen,

above the mount of radiance, by al-Faluji.

And he showed me that, in proportion to my nearness

to him, I am reckoned in the register books.

    ذاك فخراً والفخر للمدروج

    My inclusion in love’s register suffices me;

that is honor, and honor belongs to the one enrolled.

And if I am thus, then my heart has

stairways of ascent in the heaven of his love.

And upon everyone lodging in his sanctuary,

circling at his station like pilgrims,

rests a duty—a right owed to the lover:

that he be given grain from the crops of those meadows.

Especially our shaykh, who is benevolent,

beside a sea mingled with our outpouring.

And the benevolent man owes one like me kindness in wheat,

with a heart gladdened by giving.

And my prayer for you, in your absence,

rises in acceptance to the zenith of the constellations.

And my greeting of peace is offered to you with salutations,

on entering the sanctuary and departing from it,

as long as a lovesick lover sings in witnessing, communing:

Indeed, my wounded heart was intimately addressed in the unseen.
