How long shall the heart be embittered by longing's searing fire?

And how long shall ill fortune be black as script?

To God appeals a lovesick man, struck by separation

With parting's keen sword, plain in its slaughter and wrath.

Is it not time for Time to show a lover tenderness,

And fill the cup of night with reunion and justice,

From the tender, swaying, full-breasted maiden who served

Love's companion, enamored of her, a goblet of spiced wine?

Delicate of nature, she laid me low with a figure

That bent like boughs of the bān and khamṭ trees.

She charges the arena of swaying with her brown lances,

And how many a fallen man has died by the brown spear of Khatt!

And a cheek that mirrored a luxuriant garden, where

The fresh rose has unfolded with the utmost delicacy.

With a mole's dot, she dotted the unpointed script of love,

And a cheek's page, with beauty's script marked by dots.

So the horizon, arrayed in the pearls of brilliant stars,

Is but her face, radiant with necklace and earring.

So, O my liver, melt in grief, for the arrows of

Separation, whenever they come, strike and never miss.

And how often, in separation, have I spent the night sipping parting's bitter sap,

And my fate has wrapped me in a cloak of distance.

To God I complain of its calamities: how often

I spend most of my life in lifting and lowering!

Is there anyone in this age I can look to for a graceful escape,

Except him who is within it like the peerless pearl in a necklace:

Ali al-Kamal, the chosen, the most glorious,

Through whom excellence is guarded against weakness and debility.

Scion of al-Muradi, refuge of delegations if Time attacks

With the sting of its speckled serpents.

    He is the full moon, save that he does not set;

He is the sea, if you describe him—yet without a shore.

His understanding is piercing in all that he relates,

And his mind's knot of intelligence is firmly tied.

Brother of learning, master of excellence, one who has risen to

The summits of the loftiest ranks, and is not brought low.

He is the flourishing garden of letters and taste,

And but for him, excellence would end in barrenness and drought.

On his authority, in the heights, is narrated the linked tradition of his excellence,

And a freely transmitted account of taste, sound, with its conditions duly observed.

So his palm, spread open, gives you a draught of ease,

From overflowing bounty, where contraction is vanquished by expansion.
