في المقادير تحكم الأقدارُ

في المقادير تحكم الأقدارُ

ولذي اللبّ في الأمور اعتبارُ

ولذي اللبّ في الأمور اعتبارُ

Destinies rule over what is decreed,

Fate controls destinies

and the discerning find a lesson in affairs.

And the wise consider circumstances

كلّ من لم يراقب الفلك الدو

كلّ من لم يراقب الفلك الدو

وار فينا فما لذلك دار

وار فينا فما لذلك دار

Whoever fails to heed the ever-revolving sphere

Whoever does not watch the ever-revolving heavens

within us has no abode.

Will wander aimlessly and find no home

ما سوى الله في الوجود سرابٌ

ما سوى الله في الوجود سرابٌ

لنفوس الظِماء فيه اغترار

لنفوس الظِماء فيه اغترار

All that exists besides God is a mirage,

All that exists besides God is a mirage

in which the souls of the thirsty are deceived.

That deludes the thirsty souls

حيث هبّت عليه ريحٌ من الوه

حيث هبّت عليه ريحٌ من الوه

م خيالٌ بدا عليه غبار

م خيالٌ بدا عليه غبار

Where a wind of delusion blew upon it—

When the winds of illusion blew upon it

a phantom upon which dust appeared.

It seemed to be covered in dust

فانجلى ذلك الغبار ولاح ال

فانجلى ذلك الغبار ولاح ال

فجر في الأفق واستنار النهار

فجر في الأفق واستنار النهار

Then that dust cleared, and there appeared the

But that dust cleared and dawn shone on the horizon

dawn on the horizon, and the day grew bright.

The day brightened and light spread

آهِ من غفلتي بنوم غروري

آهِ من غفلتي بنوم غروري

ولفجري في أفق عمري انتشار

ولفجري في أفق عمري انتشار

Alas for my heedlessness in the sleep of my self-delusion,

Oh how I regret sleeping in deceptive slumber

while my dawn spreads on the horizon of my life.

While dawn breaks on the horizon of my life

والأماني بكأسها خادعتني

والأماني بكأسها خادعتني

فلعقلي من شربها إسكار

فلعقلي من شربها إسكار

And hopes deceived me with their cup,

And hopes deceived me with their cup

so drinking it brings intoxication to my mind.

Drinking from it intoxicated my mind

غبت فيها عن الرشاد وقد فا

غبت فيها عن الرشاد وقد فا

ت المراد الّذي عليه المدار

ت المراد الّذي عليه المدار

In them I lost sight of right guidance, and already gone was

I strayed from guidance while that which I sought

the goal on which all turns.

Slipped away though on it life depends

كان لي جيرةٌ همُ عينُ قصدي

كان لي جيرةٌ همُ عينُ قصدي

ولعيني بنورهم إبصار

ولعيني بنورهم إبصار

I had neighbors who were my very aim,

I had neighbors who were the object of my quest

and through their light my eye could see.

And through their light my eyes could see

فتواروا عنّي بحجب غروري

فتواروا عنّي بحجب غروري

فتناءت من الحجاب الديار

فتناءت من الحجاب الديار

Then they vanished from me behind the veils of my self-delusion,

But they hid from me, veiled by my arrogance

so the dwellings grew distant because of the veil.

And distance grew between us, separating homes

نقض عهدي من بينهم نقص قصدي

نقض عهدي من بينهم نقص قصدي

حلّ عقدي في الحبّ نارٌ وعار

حلّ عقدي في الحبّ نارٌ وعار

Breaking my covenant among them is a shortcoming in my resolve;

Breaking my covenant with them marred my quest

untying my knot in love is fire and disgrace.

My love's bond was fire and shame

ليس هذا قد كان بالقصد منّي

ليس هذا قد كان بالقصد منّي

لكنِ الله فاعلٌ مختار

لكنِ الله فاعلٌ مختار

This was not intentional on my part,

This was not my intent

but God acts by His own free choice.

But God acts as He wills
