Behold, God has healed my Ayyub’s pains,
Behold! Indeed God healed Ayyub's pains,
and his heart has recovered, and He has set his affairs right.
And his anguish was cured and state improved.
دعاكhas called you الّذيthe one who تدعوهyou call upon والأمرand the matter واحدٌone

The one you call upon has called you, and the matter is one.
He whom you invoke has called you, and the matter is one,
Heed his command at once, with hearing and obedience.
Respond to His command at once, hearing and obeying.

And hasten to bring the subtleties within reach, that you may ascend
And hasten to draw near with subtlety, you will ascend
the lofty steps where the beloved stretched out his arms.
The beloved's high abode, for it He has given you the key.

Did you not know, O Yaʿqub, that I, like Yusuf,
Do you not know, O Ya'qub, that I am like Yusuf
seized you when he had seen his measuring-cup in his baggage?
I have taken you since on a journey he saw his brother.

And I am healing for Ayyub, and in my hand
And I am to Ayyub like healing, and in my hand
is a healing sheaf to strike you with; you will find it in an hour.
Is to strike you the healing stick, you will find it in an instant.
فعجّلso hasten وقلand say ربّيmy Lord عجلتI hastened لبغيتيfor my desire
لترضىso You may be pleased فعنديfor within me حيّةthe serpent النفسof the self لَسّاعهfiercely stinging
So hasten, and say, ‘My Lord, I hastened in pursuit of my desire
So hurry and say, my Lord I hurried to fulfill my want
that You might be pleased, for within me is the self’s stinging serpent.’
That you may be pleased, for with me is the soul a blamer.

And your payment—or rather your Lord’s payment, O Nuʿm—
Your going out - no! - is not like your Lord's expulsion, O Excellent One,
which of the two is better, while your spirit is anguished?
So which of the two is better while your spirit is on loan?
وفيand in الطبعnature جمعٌunion حيثماwherever الفرقseparation ظاهرapparent
بقلبكin your heart شمسthe sun الروحof the spirit والنفسand the self جمّاعهan avid gatherer
And in nature there is union wherever separation appears;
In nature there is a group when separation is apparent,
in your heart is the spirit’s sun, and the self is an avid gatherer.
With your heart the sun of the spirit, and the self a group.

So send my tribute as part of your payment, swiftly;
So send my taxes within your departure swiftly,
you will see the spirit, O favored one—hasten its swift advance.
You will see, O endowed soul, hasten the departure.

And it does not depart from me, for you dwell
And do not go out from me, for you are entering
in my heart; on the qanun you play its rhythm well.
Into my heart by law, perfect its rhythm.

For payment plays a part in an hour of union;
For the exit is an entrance in the union for an hour,
in that hour I find solace in you, while the self is greedy.
In it I see your company, and the soul ever-longing.

فلاso do not تكbe فيin الأقوالwords والحالand the state مضياعهwasteful
For you are I; you are I alone, O I.
For you are I, and I alone, O self,
So do not be wasteful in words and in your state.
So do not be in words and state lost.

May God’s peace be upon you as long as the east wind blows
Upon you is God's peace whenever the breeze blows
with the fragrance of incense, or the clouds’ eyes stream with tears.
With the wafting of musk or eyes of clouds weeping.
