Before the Pole whose governance spans length and breadth

within my being, my state needs no exposition.

How could it be hidden, when his light within my being

manifests in my state, in expansion and contraction?

And he is the mirror of the essence of my life's spirit

in my witnessing; all else is body and limbs.

Rather, he is also creation's very essence, in spirit and body,

and he is the rain of sustaining aid, pouring and overflowing.

And if he is as I have said, how can the

state be hidden from him, wholly or in part?

Only because I myself am veiled did I disclose

my state to him, when my state brought me to this.

O Prophet of contentment, has not the Truth pleased you

with the explicit assurance of contentment: “that you may be pleased”?

Far be it from the Prophet, whose standing is so vast,

to see harm befall one who loves him and be content.

from a breast that deems love for him a duty.

but for hope, it would have all but come to an end.

And I clung gladly to the attainment of hope,

and sought no breach of the covenant of fidelity.

My master, time beset me with the onsets of

calamity, when fate bit me with its fang.

    مِنهُ فَتحي وَلا أَرى فيهِ خَفضا

    My suffering was to raise me to exalted standing;

from it comes my opening, and I see no abasement in it.

For how often the glance of your aiding eye has guarded

the lover's dwelling—how could it close in rapture?

And the bird of love for your beauty sang on the branch

of my youth, while its garden was fresh and tender.

How, O rain, could it become dry stubble,

when so often it has glimpsed a flash of your lightning?

How many gifts of accustomed bounty within it

have brought it to a pool from the wellspring of grace!

Especially the eye's vision that you bestowed

of your person, while my own eye was closed.

And you bestowed, O generous one, a bounty

that has flowed unceasingly, its outpouring never exhausted.

By the two companions in the tomb-garden of your resting place,

and Zahra of exalted rank, truly your daughter,

and by Uthman, possessed of modesty, and him who plunged

    headlong into seas of battle,

the appointed heir, ever charging, who made the dust witness

slaughter and hewing on the day of battle,

and by the other Companions, who lent God

their souls as a loan for your faith:

grant a Hashimite glance upon sorrows

that cut more keenly than the sharpest swords.

Would you be content that your own namesake should suffer

scorching in the fires of an age of grief?

    قَد عَرَفتَ الدَواءَ عَرضاً وَنَبضا

    This is my malady, and you are my physician;

you have discerned the cure from symptoms and pulse.

So blessings be upon you, so long as from you the rain of

succor pours and the flash of your lightning shines,

and upon your noble family and Companions,

so long as all-embracing acceptance clasps hands with a garden.
