These hills—how their expanse has narrowed within me!

What ails me, that I stumble along their slopes?

The pebbles there have grown; beneath their throng,

One path vanishes, and another breaks apart.

And my playgrounds there, and the ground where I trailed my hems,

Have grown remote; eagles cannot soar up to them.

I never thought they would change.

And I see winter—his days have lengthened,

And his stony heart has grown more cruel.

    How often he visited me, and I bared my breast to him;

Then he would stay, neither boastful nor arrogant.

I still remember how his panting

Would melt and drip from the warmth of my ribs.

I never thought he would change.

And I came to my mirror, my perfume in my hand,

And saw in it what I had never seen before.

So I lowered my gaze, dazed and aching,

And recoiled from it in anger, protesting.

It betrayed the pledges of my affection and changed.

I never thought it would change.
