    The long-necked, swift-striding camels bore Mudhiyah far away

    from me; my heart is with the departing litters, sick with love.

    I bade them farewell, and on the day of their parting my heart

    and my breast were drenched with a flood of tears.

    They departed, and the camp ruins grew worn after them,

    as though they were an inscribed surface, scraped smooth.

    If your dwelling becomes desolate, no longer inhabited,

    within my heart a dwelling of yours remains inhabited.

    If, in anger over love, you have resolved to break with me,

    my heart will never turn away from you.

    O heart's desire, patience has grown scarce, and severed are

    its cords, yet the strands of my hope remain joined.

    What harm would it do Mudhiyah in love to grant union to

    a love-enslaved man whom a bane has robbed of union with her?

    عجزاءُ لا قِصرٌ فيها ولا طولُ

    Radiant, with rising breasts, soft and full-bodied,

    full-hipped, neither short nor tall;

    a modest maiden, tender-limbed and supple,

    dusky-lipped, bright-cheeked, lovely and long-necked.

    كأنَّ غرّتها في الليل قنديلُ

    The radiance of her brow dispels the darkness of deep night;

    her brow is like a lamp in the night.

    She said, when I asked, "Is there union I may delight in?"

    "Leave me—may you be happy!—for the wine of union is tiresome."

    And I have journeyed by night while the horizon's bright stars slanted low,

    as though they were watchful, cross-eyed eyes.

    A sturdy she-camel of tested strength strides swiftly with my saddle,

    thick-cheeked, with a rose-red chin-tuft, light and swift,

    لها على النابِ حتى البُزل تفضيلُ

    wild-ass-like in vigor, massive, high-humped, and nimble;

    she surpasses aged she-camels, even the fully mature ones.

    هجنَّعٌ أربدَ الأعطافِ زُهلولُ

    She is like a courting ostrich with bare shins,

    long-necked, gray-flanked, and fleet;

    مسفّع الخدّ من مرعاه مشلولُ

    or a snub-nosed wild bull, sharp-horned and streaked,

    dark-marked on the cheek, driven from his pasture;

    or a wild-ass stallion from the asses of al-Zurq, changed by

    the stallions' biting, lean-flanked and mud-caked.

    Such a beast resembles my mount after weariness,

    when swift striding has torn the garments apart.

    And many a stagnant, fetid pool, where wolves howl

    hunched, and nimble, spotted hyenas sing,

    I reached late at night, with no weakness yet upon me,

    nor did the terrors of the night frighten me.

    And with a keen sword I marched between the two armies,

    while the armored champion shrank from the fray.

    So bright swords, brown spears, and battle know me,

    and the night, the horses, and the fierce, mighty warriors.

    And when a wayfarer visits me, I show a generosity

    that neither sea nor Nile has ever matched.

    So my honor is guarded, with no stain upon it,

    and my newly acquired wealth is freely offered to those in need.
