Rayah has ruins like the writing of foreigners,

    on the dunes of Qaww—or like the backs of speckled serpents;

then at Ghul, then Ayam, then Nafy, then Al'as,

then the dunes of Thaf, then al-Atit, then Jasim,

then Ma'qilah at ar-Ruzq, then al-Habl with its ghada trees,

then Arik's two slopes, then ar-Ruba, then as-Sara'im.

Among them are landmarks around ad-Dukhul,

like fragments of a retraced tattoo upon wrists.

Among them is a dwelling on the gravel plain of as-Sama'il,

telling us of its long-past days.

I made it out dimly then, and afterward recognized it

by a worn-out hearth and crouching, blackened stones,

and year-old gray ash and a breached tent-trench,

and a lone, rough-headed peg, split by a pounding stone, still crouching there,

    and a horse-tethering place and a camel herd's kneeling-ground,

and the playground of lovely, tender maidens:

supple saplings, swaying gracefully, soft-bodied and delicately fair,

noble women, with a long drop beneath every earring.

So time, ever new, has worn away its freshness,

and it stands deserted by its owners and great lords.

Wild winds, separation, and decay have effaced it,

and every deep-thundering cloud pouring out water.

I stood there, weeping in grief and yearning,

like a sorrowful wanderer whose heart is consumed by passion.

Then, at that moment, my close friend and companion rebuked me

for pouring out my tears among those landmarks.

He said, 'Fear the Merciful, and clothe your heart in piety,

and be patient, for patience is the noblest portion.

Do you weep for a time whose days have long passed,

though you are stout-hearted and resolute in purpose?'

I replied, while longing's fire blazed in my breast

and my eyes were like freely pouring, streaming clouds:

'O censurer, if you endured some of my yearning,

you would turn aside from blaming me and blame my censurers.

O reprover, leave me to gloom and grief,

for no prudent man remains prudent in love.

O reprover, a dwelling of Rayah's has made me weep,

long abandoned at al-Liwa, then as-Sara'im.

There I knew a life of ease and delight

with a slender-waisted woman, full in the haunches,

    full-limbed, fair, dark-lipped, tender,

pure where her necklace rested, with rounded wrists.

As though upon her mouth, when night had sunk

its stars and dawn bared its cheeks,

there were aged wine from Babylon, mingled with

chilled water from the clouds' pure flow.

And on the night they bridled she-camels for departure,

whose padded feet sent the mountain passes' flint flying,

I wept as al-Khansa wept when her Sakhr was felled

by a wrenching spear-thrust in the close-locked battlefield.

And a vast, bare, trackless desert I crossed,

while a sluggish fool crouched upon his bedding,

on a lean, fleet, hardy, massive she-camel,

great-bodied, from the choicest towering pale stock,

    dependable, chin-dipping, massive and lofty,

a choice beast among tireless, briskly striding camels.

As though I rode one of the white-bellied wild asses between 'Amayah

and the lofty slopes, among the mountain passes:

thick-limbed, stout, four-year-old, scarred by bites,

lean-bellied, made lean by biting she-asses.

    long-backed, slender-bellied, with lofty haunches.

narrow at the crown and slender in the legs?

He grazed on a' shrubs and tannum plants until he seemed,

whenever he appeared, a house with sturdy pillars.

Dun hens escort him, fluttering about his grounds,

    toward chicks crouching among eggshells.

When they speed on, the cock-ostrich runs in sweeping strides,

and if he trots, they trot, like a shepherd well attuned.

With her I dispel my cares whenever they assail me,

while many a man sits crouching, not driving care away.

when the army's heaped-up dust rises.

when every advancing warrior fears death's terrors.

When kings slept, heedless of honor and eminence,

I set to work with a wakeful, unsleeping eye.

And though I am the son of Ya'rub's sultan,

and her spearman in the close-locked battlefield,

    yet Ya'rub did not clothe me in a robe of glory;

the Lord of eminence and my own noble deeds forbade that for me.

Rather, I quench her thirst and build

her eminence, and dazzle with her radiance through my keen sword.

my glory, though they are the noblest of the noble.

nor is Hatim a Hatim when I give.

I give generously of what I have gained, to gain praise,

and no censurer's blame has deterred my generosity.

How many a fine, swift horse I have led to a poet,

and how many a bristling army I have led against a tyrant.

and my resolves pierce farther than the stars' meteors.

    My character is sweeter than purified honey;

so ask and you shall be told, if you do not know.

And sometimes I assail my enemies by force with a crushing host

that makes sleek steeds march over skulls,

upon the back of a firm-backed, broad-set horse,

long in the supports of his chest, long-shanked and lean,

with sound splint-bones, bare sinews, and a bounding stride,

tucked-bellied, broad-chested, high on his legs.

I pierce and lay low every bright-faced tyrant.

and those among them who ruled in foreign lands:

have they a tenth of my generosity and gifts?

Have they gained the noble achievements I attained?

the most generous giver, the fairest judge.

Ask, and you shall surely learn of our deeds throughout the realms.

Ask about us among the two tribes, Ma'add and Mazin,

and ask about us among the two branches, Numayr and Darim.

and most entitled to kingship—a binding decree.

Ours are kingship, crowns, the throne, and eminence,

despite the treacherous one's schemes, and to every rival's humiliation.
