تلوحُ كعنوانِ الكتابِ المعرَّبِ
Raya has a dwelling-site at al-Aqiq, then Kabkab,
The banner's pole has crimson silk fluttering,
gleaming like the heading of a book rendered into Arabic.
It waves like the title of an eloquent book.

منيفِ الغَمامِ برقه غير خُلَّبِ
Every thunderous cloud of the autumn rains has effaced it,
It is shielded from insult by every glorious knight,
towering with clouds, its lightning no rainless flash;
Its lightning in the clouds needs no sword or spear.

حنينُ مثاكيلٍ يقابلنّ نُدّب
and a scouring, raging wind, whose moaning is like
With roaring like the longing moan of angels,
the wailing of bereaved women facing other mourners.
Matching the yearning call of the bereaved.

There I halted the tawny-bearded camels; we drew tears
I stood with it defying the Ottoman hordes-
from tear-ducts that pour whenever remembrance stirs.
When the memory stirs events pour forth again.

And did your eyes yesterday behold women in their litters,
Did your eyes see our oryxes yesterday,
crossing the open grounds of al-Liwa, then al-Muhassab?
The smooth hips of antelope in the sanctuary?

As though empty ships were swaying
It was as if the hollow ships were rocking
with their sails above the swelling deep.
With their sails above the humped sand.

يذللنّ آساد العتيكِ ويعربِ
Noblewomen from the finest stock of al-Atik and Ya'rub,
Brave men whose origin is mystery and nomads
subduing the lions of al-Atik and Ya'rub.
Subdue the lairs of mystery and nomads.

They straighten the bent spears and straight swords
around forms like the sloping mounds of dune-sand.
With deeds like tent pegs firmly driven in.

قضيبُ لجينٍ إذ تُجرَّد مذهبِ
You see each radiant, playful woman, as though she were
You'd think each glowing meteor was
a gilded rod of silver when she is unclothed.
A naked sword when it shoots through the gloom.

And a man of foolish speech spared no effort, persisting
One who misspeaks but will not stop his banter
in reproaching a tormented man whose heart was stolen.
I rebuke, though he's a soul both pained and vexed.

So I told him, 'Enough! Go gently: love is indeed
So I said to him, "Your passion has muddled you-
a sovereign over the mind of the secluded sovereign.'
Love is a sovereign who reigns over reason."

Rending the ties of passion when night
night has clothed al-Liwa's bodies in a robe of deep darkness.
Covers the crowds with its dark gown.

Every red tent has a free beauty
and each pale, round-flanked, tall and massive he-camel,
And the pole at the tent's center flickers and spins.

At each beloved minaret a seeker

Of God's approval-the noblest quest.

I swear: how fine the house, within whose open courts
A sanctuary for every guest who comes
there is fare for every guest who comes calling by night.
Seeking lodging during nights of pilgrimage.

And, for hamstringing the camels with young and slaughtering them,
Leading the solitary orphan to hope
I stand surety when an orphan's hope is thwarted.
Though his dream of kin may ever be denied.

I beam upon my guest, delighted by his visit,
I beam at my guests with joyous welcome

And give them my bounty without reserve.

And many a band of riders—a youth among them howled, seeking barks
A band of raiders came howling like dogs
from the dogs of encamped folk, whose voice did not deceive.
But my heralds' voices did not lie.

I raised for them a radiant fire, its brilliance rising
I sent them envoys; high flew their banners
like a brocade banner upon the crest of a lookout hill.
Like brocade atop a lofty dome.

When they saw it, they cried 'God is greatest!' and turned,
When the raiders saw them they cried "God is Great!"
answering the summons of its blazing voice.
And turned, answering the fiery call.

حُسامي ولم أجنحْ لقولٍ مؤنّبِ
So I told them, 'Welcome!' and hastened, baring
I called out, "Welcome!" and met them with peace
my keen sword, not yielding to a reproacher's words.
And my swords though ready did not threaten.

هضابُ سدورٍ أو شماريخُ عُرَّبِ
Then high-humped, unruly camels confronted me, as though they were
Facing me was an arid desert, as if
the hills of Sudur or the pinnacles of Urrab.
It were Dahna's plateau or stony ground.

So I rushed at the first, and its shank was severed,
I charged the first part and it collapsed,
and it fell, cloaked in gushing blood.
Falling inert into the sandy wadi.

And I surprised another; it shielded itself with its neck
I surprised another part whichprotected itself-
against my sword, then cried out in a wavering bellow.
My swords buzzed around it in orbits.

So I fell at once, then turned to an aged she-camel,
Then I leaned my weight into a stubborn stretch
a prized beast of the herd, whose like had never been butchered.
And it yielded like a docile bride.
فجدَّلتُهاso I felled it ثمthen اهتتفتُI shouted بأعُبديfor my slaves

So I felled it, then shouted for my slaves,
I subdued it then summoned my servants;
and they came as ravening wolves swoop down.
They came like preying eagles respond when called.

and some carrying water, and some busily supplying guest-fare.
Bearing water or pitching tents for guests
And offering hospitality to a guest is the most binding of duties.
Which, for the guest, is service's highest duty.

So these are my ways; I have never departed from their old course,
Such are my ways, still as they were before,
and my grandfather was like this, as was my father.
My father and grandfather were the same.
