Oh, has the parting of your departing companions grieved you?

When they left you—and every intimate companion must depart.

The companions departed, and with them your patience departed.

Yet it remains with the one who stays and dwells.

Would that the loved ones, the day they haltered their caravan,

Had granted a glimpse of the one with enchanting youth.

They went far away, and I kept pouring streams of tears,

Whose torrents drenched the baldrics of Dhu al-Riqab.

And after them I was left with outward grief,

Plain to you for their sake, and grief concealed within.

Yes, the departing travelers sped toward a destination

    Far off, not easily reached.

Their camel-litters stirred my weeping, as though they were

Yamin's ships amid the heaped-up mirage.

O dwelling, time bolted away with your people,

Casting them into dispersal and separation.

May rain bless your days, dwelling where we once lingered,

Playing with fair, bewitching maidens like suns.

Each one a secluded maiden of dazzling beauty,

Full-hipped, like a silver ingot, chaste.

A tender maiden who makes fools of every learned sage

Who guides mankind, and every sharp, discerning man.

    وإذا رنتكَ رَنتْ بعينيْ شادِنِ

    When she shies away from you, she shows you a gazelle's neck;

When she gazes at you, she gazes with a fawn's eyes.

Raya's age-mates, with time on our side,

And fate watching us with a peacemaker's eye,

Until time trifled with our union

And destroyed it—fate, that most treacherous betrayer.

O Raya, by your figure and your face's beauty, I swear:

You awakened every sleeping, hidden grief.

I disdain to submit to a tyrant

In abasement: better to have the soft tip of one's nose cut off.

Rather, many a day and night I have spent in pleasure,

With flutes, intoxicants, and chaste maidens.

And from my beloved's palm I drank wine,

    Undiluted, stirring every dormant longing.

And many a vast, shimmering, stagnant-looking mirage

I raced its wolves like a racer laying wagers.

And I cross the shimmering wastes on a hardy she-camel,

One of Mahra's pale camels, powerful and massive.

O Raya, I am no craven, timid soul

On the day of battle, nor a weakling coward.

Indeed, by your claim upon me, I am a frightened heart's safety,

A heart accustomed to grief, and the terror of a heart at ease.

    ليس البذولُ لماله كالخازنِ

    I lavish what I possess, while another hoards;

One who lavishes his wealth is not like one who hoards it.

I am the lord of kings, unchallenged,

And the death of every combatant and spear-fighter.

I am good fortune to every peaceful man, but ill fortune to every

Foe who severs ties, indeed the death of every quarrelsome enemy.

I am he before whom tyrants fall prostrate

In battles and the clash that drives men back.

My dwellings are the dwellings of whoever brings praise,

And my treasuries are the treasuries of the poor supplicant.

My petitioner finds honor and booty,

As a bounty, just as my challenger finds death.

A king who thrusts with the straightened spear and strikes—

Ask about this king, mighty in striking and thrusting.

God has written on the tip of my Indian blade:

You are death, and in you lies the doomed man's end.

When he came drawing a sword befitting his name, Husam,

Sharp, its edge unsafe for anyone who touched it,

Leading a bristling host like a sea with swelling waves,

Dense, rank following rank, clamoring in mingled tongues,

With Mudari blades and broad spearheads,

Badri ones, and rank upon rank of poised steeds,

And horsemen like the lions of Bisha, among whom

Were blows that stunned even the lurking champion.

I donned my ample armor, trusting

In the Manifest, the Life-Giver, the Death-Giver, the Hidden.

And mounted Jafla while spears were leveled,

And the horses mingled in striking and thrusting.

Fierce warriors cried to the men to rouse their courage,

And the air was armored in thick, billowing dust.

Within a clamorous, crowded host, whose dust seemed—

With the bright blades—a starry, overcast night.

I made their foremost drink a bitter cup

Of death's scorching heat, hidden in my spearpoint.

I felled him and leveled my spear, jerking it

At an armored warrior who outmatched men of valor.

I pierced him; he fell upon the smooth front of his brow,

Clothed in hot blood from his entrails.

Then I pierced his rear; he clattered down, fourth,

And fell; many a sword-drawer was like a man holding in urine.

And many a mighty youth I laid open with a blow

That brought him his appointed, inevitable doom.

He came at me with a proud, audacious bearing,

Then turned away from me with a shameful bearing.

And a man of Quda'a—I scattered his fledglings

With the blade, until he fell, the most abject of the abased.

I won the praise of both armies through my valor:

Indeed, praise is a trader's finest profit.

The horsemen shrank back from me when they saw

Haydar's charges in the campaign against Hawazin.

I returned with my unpolished blade notched,

And blood pouring, streaming over my two garments.

Then their noble and their lowly began to say

Words that stirred every hidden, settled soul:

    God bless Abu Ali! He

Revived generosity and slew every quarrelsome foe.

He lavished newly acquired wealth and guarded a spotless honor.

    What a lavish, honor-guarding king!

I swear a solemn oath by God,

And God clothes the traitor's face in shame:

Had the man seeking my downfall been anyone but my brother,

I would have made him drink the fetid cup of death.

For I know that no enemy who desists

From what he attempts is like an enemy who persists.

    Convey to Husam—calamities being many—

From one whose heart boils with the fire of grudges:

What has become of the dominion you hoped for?

It swerved and would not advance, like a balking mount.

A faction stole your wits in urging you to fight me,

Not despairing, though proceeding with feeble fortune.

You never ceased to call me to a warrior's duel,

With the challenge of a man who would not hold back his wiles,

    Until, when war's flames blazed

And rose high, I loathed my thrusts and encounters.

So attend to yourself; bind yourself to sound judgment,

And take the stance of a sensible, humble man.

I am the death that must be

    Encountered; death will not depart.

    لا عادَ ربك أيَّ ثاوٍ ماكنِ

    I swear, a pouncing attacker has yielded to my might;

May your Lord never visit any settled, rooted dweller.

Victory comes from God; He has ordained it

For me in battles, in His decree that comes to pass.
