News that almost makes the earth tremble,

And its mountains nearly split and crack.

Restless at night, tossing and turning.

O Husam, the grief of your day has sickened my mind;
The grief of your day has troubled my thoughts,
grief passes through hearts and sears them.
And grief stings hearts so they ache.

Your loss has pained me though before this
had a grievous calamity brought me pain.
No agony could make me ache.

I found it hard to lose you, O brother
of chaste character, whose generosity never ceases.
Of noble traits whose generosity knew no bounds.

God be praised for you, an awe-inspiring scion of a throne,
To God you were the finest ever reared
reared long ago by an awe-inspiring scion of a throne.
In past times in the finest, noblest of abodes.

Accursed be your day! How much it spilled, how deeply it grieved—
Damn the day you left, how many it made weep
tears, and a heart that had never quailed before it.
And weep their hearts out in anguish.

Before this, I never thought a mountain could be carried,
I thought the bier would never pass me by
until your bier passed me, borne aloft.
Until your coffin passed carried on high.

Would that your day had never been, O son of my mother! For it
Far from auspicious was your day, O son
is a day more bitter than death, more grievous.
Of Tubba, dire and full of woe.

My anguish for you is like that of a hopeful man whose

Has dashed his hopes and left him disappointed.

My anguish for you is like that of a tribe with no one left
I yearn for you as the living who gained
among them to harm you or help you while you are gone [wording unclear].
Nothing from your loss, nor were they harmed.
لهفيmy anguish عليكَfor you كلهفِlike the anguish of أُمٍa mother بَرَّةٍloving

My anguish for you is like that of a loving mother
I yearn for you as a doting mother
who lost an unborn child, bereaved and yearning.
Who lost her baby and is left inconsolable.
لهفيmy anguish عليكَfor you كلهِفِlike the anguish of طفلٍa child قطعّتwere severed

My anguish for you is like that of a child whose
I yearn for you as a child severed
bonds were severed, leaving him weeping in grief.
From kin who now weeps, forlorn.

My anguish for you is like that of horses whose
I yearn for you as horses whose ears
ears are cropped in mourning for their loss of you.
Are slit as a sign of their grieving for you.

Before your going given to breaking down.

If I have incurred guilt by killing you, truly I am
Oh my brother, you have drained my tears that now
stricken with grief for you, O son of the lord of Ya'rub.
Flow free down my cheeks as I weep and wail.

My hand deliberately cut off my own hand, though I had thought
Alone you left me then left me to weep
before that one hand would not cut off another.
For you by every grave dug in the earth.

May God, your Lord, never send you far away, a traveler
How long I stayed by your tomb weeping
who has set out for a destination with no return.
Though that cannot help you, O Tubba’s son.

And may your fortune rise again, noble steed that stumbled,
How long I paused, praying and reciting
for whom time's fortune stumbles and limps,
Though the dead sense naught, nor hear what we say.

when God ordained a death for you;
To save you from death’s grip, my clan
for once death approaches, it cannot be repelled.
Dear princely son, I would give all I own.

Indeed, you would lead the poised steeds, lean-flanked,
Your sword cut down foes, now it lies
slim-bellied, moving nimbly against their bits and galloping.
Still, harming none, its edge gone.
ولقدand indeed تجودyou gave freely بماof what ملكتyou owned وماand no اغتدىwent forth at dawn

Indeed, you gave freely of what you owned, even when no
God spared me the blow though death
singer came forth proclaiming your praise in assemblies.
Loomed, its stroke warded off and held back.

You beautified the orators' [eulogies?], just as
May God reward you with gardens and bliss
I beautified the praise of you that was richly adorned.
For His grace and your Lord’s succor suffices.

O my brother, you humbled my guarded tears, and they sprang forth
For as long as wild doves mourn, I will weep
to tread my cheeks, pouring freely and streaming.
For a comrade ne’er to be replaced or matched.
أوحدتنيyou left me alone وذهبتَand departed ثمthen تركتنيleft me
أبكيI weep لفقدكَfor the loss of you كلَّevery قبرٍgrave يوضعُthat is made
You left me alone and departed, then left me
Tell the base cowards that I will retaliate
weeping for your loss at every grave that is made.
With keenest blades, my resolve is unshakeable.

How often I remained beside your tomb, weeping,
Is there one like my brother among you
if only that could help, O son of Tubba'!
Whose might my sword cut down in his prime?

لوif only كانwas يعقلunderstands ميتٌa dead person أوor يسمعُhears

How often I stood offering greetings and speaking,
So I warn all tribes of what will come
if only a dead man could understand or hear!
From me, a sharp unsheathed blade that slashes.

May my family ransom you from death's calamity,
Leave off your pride, fear my wrath, fear a man
O son of kings, and all the wealth I gather.
Whose blade all valiant warriors dread and fear.

Before your day, your sword cut keenly,
To me you and your women are the same,
but on your day it grew blunt, unable to cut [uncertain reading].
Yours may be braver, more gallant and bold.

You angered me with an utterance; a death was decreed,
You will be like sheep, dazed, set upon,
it came, and there was no defense against it.
With white swords unsheathed, bared and exposed.

So may God reward you with the Gardens as recompense
Like locusts taking off, scattered apart
from Him; by your Lord, He is the finest refuge.
By searing flames in a raging inferno.

I shall surely weep for you as long as there yearns for its mate
Forevermore will the days grind you down
a loving companion, and as long as doves keep cooing.
In never ending turmoil and grief.

Tell the sons of the ignoble that my Indian-steel blade
I will raise up clouds of vengeance
is the keenest of swords, and my resolve cuts deeper.
Pregnant with torrents of hissing, searing rain,
هلis there فيكمamong you كأخيlike my brother لديَّin my eyes جَلالةًin majesty

Is there among you anyone as majestic in my eyes as my brother,
My resolve is to spare none nor any
though it was he who lay slain by my sword?
Fortress stand that I will not raze.

Horsemen like lions, fiercely attacking,
before whom all armored champions bow and submit.
Who never retreat, nor flinch, nor hesitate,

To me there is no difference between you and your women,
And spears whose keen heads thirst
and in my eyes they are braver than you.

It is as though I see you once it has come upon you,
And steeds swift to charge like wolves
with bright swords flashing and spearheads leveled:
That mass if their pack scents blood.

like the ewes of Tawdih, charged by a lion,
Kings are above commoners for God
scattering in flight, their scattered flock beyond gathering;
Made them rulers, as He willed, just like Tubba.

We are people of heavenly waters and Dhu Tuwa,
in a dark cloud's shadow by a raging blaze.
Hood the prophet our carpenter and wellspring.

I shall surely bring to tyrants a millstone of death,
And we, when dark clouds deny their rain, have
turned forever by grief-bringing time.
Gifts galore that heal, benefit and enrich.

God elevated us high above the stars
black, their downpour a potent, deadly poison,
For He raises and lowers whom He will.
