Is it because you studied Mudhiya's ruined dwellings,

like an inscription from the writings of India,

deserted for three years and altered

by crosswinds whirling through the dwelling's open courts,

when time has ravaged it and left it effaced?

And motionless hearthstones, like the dots of thāʾ, leaning

    over mottled ash lying there, darkened and soot-black;

and a ragged, darkened stake, its head gashed

by maidservants' blows with pounding stones, scar-marked.

her ornaments tinkle just above her breast.

A white gazelle in neck, a long-tailed wild bull in eye,

yet neither wild bull nor white gazelle resembles her.

I have not forgotten my delight with her, when union was unbroken,

and our reprover's cord was severed amid our pleasure.

    والودُّ ما بيننا نصفان مقسومُ

    and the love between us was shared in equal halves;

as though they were pearls strung along a thread.

nine nights and five; her hair is an endless night.

a poisoned arrow cleaves the hearts of lions.

wild-ass-strong, a mighty daughter of the breeding stallion.
