    If, before the pursuit of

    Loftiness and immense honor,

There lay a roaring sea of clashing waves,

Brimming full, beyond all hope of crossing,

I would swim across it, borne by

One full of vigor, powerful and fierce of bite.

If between me and its attainment stood

A beast with bloodied claws and breast,

I would drive it back, braving hardship,

With a bone-cleaving, keen, slicing blade.

Or if a towering, lofty mountain stood,

Daunting a man of tireless resolve,

I would scale the loftiest peak

Upon it, with a steadfast heart.

    With fiercely kindled, raging flame,

I would tread through it, never afraid,

Even were it the fire of Hell.

Or if bright swords barred the way,

Whose drink is the water of bodies,

I would advance upon them like an armored warrior,

    Valiant, ferocious, hungry for battle,

    Bearing a gleaming blade

Whose battle-nicks wore out its polishers.

    And brother to forbearance, whenever

The wind of folly hurls the forbearing man aside.

My nature is gentler than the breeze,

Even when the breeze's passage grows faint.

And when kings vie with one another,

I surpass them in immense honor.

    And when armored warriors clash,

And the slain fall upon the wounded,

    And horses stumble over spearheads

And armored warriors, lords among men,

    I plunge through battle-dust on a long-limbed mare,

    Like a fierce, pitch-black falcon.

And indeed I traverse the shimmering wastes,

And wear the mantle of black night,

    On a massive, spirited she-camel

That dispels the agonies of care.

And my gifts flow, one after another, to

The rich among humankind and the destitute.

And my honor is wholly intact,

Pure white in surface and in skin.

And many a tender, soft-skinned maiden,

Smooth-fleshed at elbows and bony points,

    I have courted with wine

That brings delight to the boon companion.

    Every goal I have attained,

And thanks be to the Eternal Refuge, the Great.
