By acacias at al-Ṣafīḥa is a gazelle,

    She hunts thick-necked lions unawares.

Screened by horses, bright swords and spears,

And every proud, aquiline-nosed man, dauntless as a falcon.

    Of ʿAnīn, sunlike and moonlike,

The noblest of her peers, maidens reared in a curtained chamber.

When she seeks to slay a man who will not yield,

Without arrows, among living souls, without treachery,

She draws aside a veil—had it been drawn aside before her

Over the full moon, eclipse would never have left the moon.

And she draws swords from languid eyelids:

They are magic, more cunning in deception than magic.

And she sways a figure that, were she to bend it once,

Beside the tawny lances, would shame the tawny Rudaynī spears.

She set herself to killing me, while youth made her sway,

So her waist trembles beneath the bending pressure of her hips.

[The opening phrase concerning my eyelid is unclear]; she made off with my life's blood.

And kindled the blaze of my longing and sapped my inner strength.

So here I am, lovesick, crazed by the thought of her,

Even though she burns my heart with separation's blazing heat.

Unhurried, swaying in figure, slim-waisted and soft-fleshed,

Spotless where her necklace rests, sweetly fragrant.

Her breast refuses to let the tunic touch her belly,

And her hips do not creep up upon her waist.

As though upon her mouth lay a cloud's pure, sweet water,

    Replenished with clear Khusrawī wine.

May God water the faded traces at al-Ṣafīḥa,

    Rāya's, with torrential, unceasing rain.
