رُسوماً مِثلَ أسطارِ الكتابِ
At ‘Alij, then in the valley of Qaww, I recognized
I knew the cure, so with a brave tribe
traces like the lines of a book,
I had markings like the lines of scripture

فما بينَ الحنِادجِ فالهضابِ
then at Burqat ‘Aqil, deserted for years,
So an intelligent lightning strengthened years
and in the land between al-Hanadij and the hills—
Between the gravel and the plateaus

يُؤوِّدُ غُصنَها خمرُ الشبابِ
belonging to Khawla, a soft, full-bodied, playful beauty,
For Khaulah, who is a glowing candle
whose bough the wine of youth bends.
Whose branch is ripened by the wine of youth

سُلافٌ زُوّجت بابن السَّحابِ
As though her saliva were from the daughter of the vine—
Her buttocks were like the daughter of generosity
pure wine wedded to the son of the clouds.
Married to the son of clouds

Slender of figure, she has a smile
Swaying in figure, having a smile
like flashes of lightning from white clouds.
Like the twinkling of lightning from the hilltops

When she turns away, you see her quivering,
When she turned, I saw her sway
as the crashing surge of the sea heaves.
As a turbulent sea sways

So leave what brings a lovesick man no benefit,
Leave what is of no benefit to a youth
who is led astray in recollection and sobbing.
Deceived by conceit and withdrawal

And say: ah, how many a desolate, distant waste,
And say, O Lord of an empty, bleating wilderness
like a shield's back, shining with mirage,
Like the back of a shield shining with mirage

I crossed on a swift, tawny-bearded camel,
I cut through with the swords of 'Uthnun
a noble beast from noble herds of camels.
Noble, from the soft and delicate

which spiders swathe in their spittle,
With the spittle of fermentation

And I returned, while for the wolves there was
in packs answered one another with clamorous howls.
Howling, conversing in distress

And many a day, long as the Day of Gathering,
And a day like resurrection day in length
I folded up its cloak with a tender, budding-breasted maiden.
I folded its garment in wrinkled old age

I am the son of those who preceded for all glory
and of the lords of cavalry squadrons and domed tents.
And lords of encampments and domes

And the kings of earth knew that I
the seat of glory and pure ancestral honor.
Am settled pride and reason of intellect

Food for villains and wolves

And I troubled the hearts, so no heart
among the enemies that is not trembling.
Of the enemies is without turmoil

And a sharp sword in battle without bending

and the most wretched are more deserving of punishment.
And for the wretched, more deserving of punishment
