وإليَّand to me ينتسبclaims kinship المقامُthe station الأرفعُloftiest
All glory returns to my side,
All the glory comes back to me,
and the loftiest station claims kinship with me.
And the highest position is attributed to me,
وإذاand when يُضافis set beside ليَto me الكريمُthe noble man وإنand even if عَلاrose high
شرفاًin honor غداbecame وهوand he is اللئيمthe base one الأوضعُthe lowest
And when a noble man is set beside me, however high
And when the generous joins me, even if he is high,
his honor, he becomes the basest and lowest.
He becomes honorable and he is the most humble,
فإذاso when احتويتُI held sway فأيُّthen what ملكٍking قيصرٌCaesar

وإذاand when ذُكرتI was mentioned فماthen what is المُتَوَّجthe crowned تُبَّعُTubbaʿ
So when I hold sway, what kind of king is Caesar?
So when I contain, which king is Caesar,
And when I am named, what is crowned Tubbaʿ?
And when I am mentioned, who is the crowned pursued,
منfrom عيصthe stock هودHud اللهِGod دَوْحتيَmy great tree التيwhich
منfrom دونbeneath محتدِهاits ancestral root النجومthe stars الطُّلَّعُrising
My great ancestral tree springs from the stock of God's Hud,
From the guidance of Hud is my inscription,
below whose roots lie the rising stars.
Which without it the prominent stars are pursued,
أناI المكارمِnoble virtues والمحامدِand praiseworthy qualities معدِنa mine
والفضلand excellence والمجدِand glory المؤثَّلِdeep-rooted منبعُa fountainhead
I am the mine of noble virtues and praiseworthy qualities,
I am the source of virtues and praises,
and the fountainhead of excellence and deep-rooted glory.
And the overflowing spring of favor and collected glory,
فإذاso when وهبتُI gave فكلُّthen every قَفْزٍbarren tract (reading uncertain) مخصبٌfertile

وإذاand when نهبتُI plundered فكلُّthen every ربعٍdwelling-place بَلقعُdesolate
So when I give, every barren tract grows fertile;
So when I grant, every leap is fertile,
and when I plunder, every dwelling-place lies desolate.
And when I plunder, every quarter is barren,
وإذاand when تَريَّثَlagged سعيُthe striving أملاكِof kings الوَرىof humankind
عنshort of رتبةٍa rank فأناthen I السريعthe swift one المسرعthe hastener
And when the striving of the world's kings lags
And when the effort of the masters of the earth lingered,
short of a rank, I am swift and hasten ahead.
About a position, I am the quick accelerator,
فإليso to me لآبةُthe clan كلّevery مجدٍglory تعتزىclaims descent
وعليَّand above me رايةُthe banner كلevery حمدٍpraise تُرفعُis raised
So every clan of glory traces its descent to me;
So to me belongs the sign of every pride attributed,
and above me the banner of every praise is raised.
And on me the banner of every praise is raised,

And whenever kings race me toward the heights,
And whenever the kings race me to the heights,
I outstrip them, and they fall short, exhausted and limping.
I outpace while they fall short and are frustrated,
فإذاso when أصُولُthe ancestral roots ملوكof kings قومٍof a people دنّسِتare tainted

So when the ancestral roots of a people's kings are tainted
So if the origins of the kings of a people are stained,
by admixture, my lineage shines resplendent.
With impurity, the bright new moon shines for me,

Ancestral honor like pure gold, and a lineage
Enough is the narrative of the shiny gold and the sole focus,
purer than silver, and more radiant.
Purer than white paper and more shining,

I am the best who ever wore the sword-baldric, and the best who
I am better than the one who carried spears and better than,
rode noble steeds, and the one to whom recourse is made.
The one who rode steeds and who the spearheads are aimed at,

والحمدَand praise فيin بذلِgiving away التّلادinherited wealth مجمعُa gatherer
I scatter wealth in gathering praise,
Wealth has a distributor in collecting praise,
and gather praise by giving away inherited riches.
And praise in giving gifts has a collector,
أصغيI listen لأقوالِto the words العُفاةِof bounty-seekers ولمand not أكنI was

I listen to the pleas of bounty-seekers, and never have I
I listen to the words of the chaste and I have not been,
heeded reproach for bestowing gifts.
To blame in giving gifts listening,

So I am the raincloud when clouds have changed
So I am the cloud, when the clouds change,
their gentle ways: my rain never ceases.
From it the creatures of its gentleness do not depart,

And I am death when doom bares
And I am the dove, when death loosens,
its shin, and the day is dust-dark and blackened,
Its leg and the day is made desolate,

والبيضُand the bright blades تلمعflash والأسنَّةand the spearheads شُرَّعleveled
and horses neigh, and horsemen proclaim their lineages,
And the horses neigh and the knights moan,
and bright blades flash, and spearheads are leveled.
And the swords shine and the spearheads are deployed,
ومدَّججٍand an armored warrior ذيpossessing نجدةٍvalor متخصّبstained

And many an armored warrior, valiant, stained
A fighter fully armed and steadfast,
with horsemen's blood, ruthless and unafraid,
His blood spilt by the knights intensely overflowing,

a buyer of pure wine, generous with all he possessed
Pure and freely giving with what it contains,
in pursuit of praise, sparing no effort and never abasing himself—
In praise, not ceasing nor hesitating,

I turbaned him with the edge of a keen, bright sword,
Crowned with the white defiant turban,
flashing like lightning beneath a cloud's shade.
Like lightning in the shadow of the clouds shining,

So I left him meat for beasts, swathed
So I left him ravenous beasts entangled,
in blood, the hungry wolves taking turns at him.
With blood the hungry wolves share,

The barren, dark-hued eagles tread his torn remains,
The cranes tread the tall necks humiliated,
and turn their faces from him, veiling themselves.
And ward them off while their faces are masked,

ولقدand indeed تكونit is أبيَّةًdefiant ماnot توزَعis restrained
And many a battalion filling open space I held in check,
And a troop that fills the space I deployed it,
though it was defiant, not to be restrained.
And it may be a intrepid group that is not deployed,

And many a bristling, clashing host surged as though
And a surging wave that storms as if,
it were a brimming sea stirred by storms.
It is a sea stirred by violent gales,

I churned its depths and waded through its surge
I stirred its caldron and stirred its thickness,
with my sword; I neither feared nor quailed.
With the sword, I did not panic nor am I afraid,

And how many a poor man came to my dwelling seeking bounty,
And how many poor came to my abode healthy,
then turned away wealthy and well supplied!
Then turned away while he is the rich provider,

And many a milk-starved man whose clan's milch stock was consumed
And an ally whose sweetness of his tribe,
by time, which betrays and cheats the noblest—
A lifetime betrays the most generous and deceives,

I ended his craving for milk with full-grown camels:
I spent his blindness with a flood of white stallions,
a hundred, that cramped the widest open plain.
That the vast space is too narrow for,

And noble, well-kept horses I led out,
And steeds of noble horses I presented,
as recompense for praise, bounding against their reins.
Instead of praise roaming in the elevated places they tear,

I revived dead generosity with bounty, just as
I revived the dead generosity generously,
Joshua turned the sun back from its setting.
As the gazelle returned from the setting sun that flames,

I am keener and more cutting in resolve than a sharp sword
I accomplish and determine with resolve from a sharp sword,
in battle, though it cuts more keenly than death.
In intimidation, while it from death is more cutting,

And my gifts fill the countries and my ambition,
the blazing stars bow and submit.
Aspires to them the shooting stars submit and bow down,

Ask about me, to be told of the Yemeni
Ask me to inform you of the helper in whom,
in whom all noble virtues and praiseworthy qualities are gathered.
Are the virtues and the praises all together,

A free giver of kindness, awe-inspiring, outstanding
The volunteer of kindness is most skillful,
in glory, yet a free giver in generosity.
In glory, but in bounty he volunteers,

A lion before whom lions bow in awe,
A lion subdued by lions in awe,
and a death from whom death itself recoils.
And death from him death panics,

If I reached for Yadhbul or touched its hump
If I become angry he withers or if I touched his idol,
with resolve, Yadhbul would soon split apart.
With determination he almost withers and cracks,

Or if the first stirrings of my might touched Radwa,
Or if I wore the softness of the origins of my power,
they would cleave its boulders, and its soft white stones would melt.
It would crack its solidity and the armor melts,

Or they resembled them in the ribs the lame,

and the bright swords are notched, yet still
And the swords unsheathed and did not cease,
thick necks are lopped and severed by them,
To overcome the necks they hack and cut off,

You knew me as a lion furiously carrying,
on a summit where utter desolation reigns.
In a few I am stronger than them the calamities,

And I battle the noble champion in his own fashion,
And I skin the generous Karamah skinning him,
and humble him, though he is mighty and awe-inspiring.
And humiliate him while he is the most honorable,

Ask me the enemies will tell you that I,
am like time, lowering and raising whomever I will.
Lower whom I want like time, and raise,

And I harm some peoples and benefit others
And harm some people and benefit others,
out of nobility—who like me can harm and help?
Generously who is like me harms and benefits?

I confront Antar in battle's tumult, and he shrinks back;
I care for Antarah in fury to drink,
and I lead Tubbaʿ in glory, and he follows.
And I lead Tubba in glory to be followed,

And I safeguard my honor, spending to protect it
And I protect my honor sacrificing in its protection,
my wealth, so it is neither breached nor cracked.
My money so it is not pierced or cracked,

And I have indeed drunk a beauteous, choice wine,
And I certainly drank a delightful drink,
pure wine, brightened with water from night-traveling clouds.
Pure with the water of the Sariyaat it flickered,

Yellow as molten gold—bewildered
Yellow like molten gold the qualities were confused,
are descriptions of it; they limp behind.
In it so they refrained from it the shaded,

So its starry bubbles, and the wine itself, seem
As if it were a star of its bubbles and as if it,
pearls studded upon a monarch's crown.
Were a pearl on the crown of the king decorated,

I shared it with lords of Yaʿrub's noblest stock,
I took it from a secret that would please the masters,
and shy maidens before whom the awe-inspiring warrior bows.
And brides the most honorable aspire to,

So in my exhilaration, I gave away all my hands possessed,
So I gave what my hands possessed in my ecstasy,
and often I grew sober, yet my bounty never ceased.
And how often I was sober while my attainment does not cease,

And many a nursling of sovereignty whose fledglings I sent flying
And a youth of sultanate I incubated its chicks,
with my sword, while bright, keen blades flashed.
With the sword and the sharp white swords shine,
ساورتُهI sprang at him فيin النَّقْعِbattle-dust ثمthen عَلَوْتُهI struck him

I sprang at him in the battle-dust, then smote him
I entertained him in hunting then elevated him,
with a penetrating blade that cleaves and cuts iron.
With resolute determination splitting iron and cutting,

كالعَيرِlike a wild ass يفحصpaws فيin الثرىthe soil ويُبَوّعُand stretches its limbs
So he fell upon his bare brow, sprawling,
So he fell freely with his forehead pouring,
like a wild ass pawing the earth and stretching its limbs.
Like a camel searching in the earth and pierced,

So I left him felled beneath the swirling dust,
So I left him under the armor entangled,
the four winds shrouding him in drifting dust.
The sands cover him from all four directions,

Hold back, tyrant kings, for I
Wait O tyrants of kings, for I am,
am like death: by my life, there is no warding it off.
Like death, never by my life averted,

What you sow, you shall soon reap,
What you plant you reap soon,
and a man soon reaps whatever he sows.
And man reaps soon what he plants,
