    Ah, Saʿb, may your mother be bereaved of you!

    Are you sober, or drunk and besotted?

    You gathered Muwayniʿ and Abu Shurayh,

    and the Sawalim and the Nuful came to you.

    فرأيكَ والعُلى رأيٌ ضليلُ

    And you came so that he would surely rule Oman through them;

    so your plan, by lofty glory, is misguided.

    Has God not created minds for you?

    And by God, you have no minds!

    the skittish one would not have flown off with your knee-binding—

    that we defend her with tall spears,

    and might that never ends and never fades,

    على صفحاته عَلق يسيلُ

    and every keen, polished Indian blade,

    over whose flat sides thick blood flows;

    تجول على المناطق أو تدولُ

    and every ample, closely linked coat of mail, like a pool,

    swaying over the girdles or shifting about;

    يميل إذا تأوّبه الصهيلُ

    and every well-formed, noble, smooth-cheeked steed,

    which sways when neighing reaches it;

    and every noble, gallant, unbowed leader,

    before whose resolve great calamity dwindles?

    He gives his life freely while death is plain to see,

    when the abject man hoards his life,

    as though death in battle were at peace

    with him, or recoiled from its challenger.

    The birds keep following his two banners,

    in flocks that neither swerve nor turn aside.

    So, by the Ancient House and the one who built it,

    and by what the Messenger brought to the people—

    the oath of a long-haired, freeborn, noble man,

    mighty in combat, who does what he says—

    I swear: may I find no joy with a woman of coy grace,

    like Maʿab, until Saʿb is seen slain,

    sharp swords and tall spears assailing him,

    and horses galloping over his ribs.

    I shall leave, if I live on, Saʿb's women

    wailing for him in their grief.

    I shall leave, if I live on, Saʿb's men

    torn apart by spearheads and blades.

    I shall leave, if I survive, Saʿb's daughters

    as wailing mourners, with bereavement allotted to them.

    And I shall return with spoils, with captives from among them,

    shuffling in chains, already hurt by their fetters.

    ذلولاً لا يُقاس به ذَلولُ

    And I shall leave every stubborn man in the kingdoms

    so submissive that no submissive man compares with him;

    and leave there every man his people honor,

    humbled, with even the lowly eager to take advantage of him.

    Indeed, the townsfolk and the desert folk know,

    and the tent-dwellers and the encamped clan,

    that among kings my fire-stick is the surest to kindle,

    and I am the most generous of those who give and bestow.

    أبيٌّ لا ألفٌّ ولا نكولُ

    My neighbor is honored; my benefactions are praised.

    I am unbowed, neither weak nor prone to retreat;

    when the bold man is overcome by the urge to retreat.

    I am generous: no reproacher turns me aside,

    when the lavish giver is swayed by the reproacher.

    I loved horses and battle while still a child,

    and giving wealth away even if the lavish giver withholds it.
