A righteous man's oath, by the neighing steeds,

And by the keen-edged blades that cleave and sever,

And by the mail, like pools, woven by Tubbaʿ,

And by the supple, swaying Samhari spears:

I swear: how fine a tribe we are, when there sweep

Scouring winds that scatter the rain at dusk.

And fine kings are we, striking heads in battle,

And givers of good, lavish gifts.

And fine sons of battle are we, whenever there glitter

The stars of spearheads in the gloom of battle dust.

Bold raiders, roaming deserts in their quest,

When the sun spits its spittle across the empty plains.

Kindlers of war, chaste of loin, who subdued

With gleaming, keen blades every valiant king.

They hasten to oft-renewed war, as there stride

Lions of a lair beneath showers and a downpour.

Ours are Sabaʾ and the two gardens at Maʾrib,

And Nizwa, and all that Samaʾil's two flanks encompass.

And of us are Sulayman the valiant and Zafir,

And Nabhan, patron of every barefoot and shod man.

And Haritha the patrician is of us, and ʿAmir,

And ʿAmr, son of Maʾ al-Muzn, refuge of widows.

And Qahtan, lord of the crown, and King Yashjub,

And mankind's succor, al-Ghawth, lord of the great armies,

And Kahlan, and al-ʿAnqaʾ, the ʿAnqaʾ of Yaʿrub,

And Hud, God's prophet, the finest of the virtuous.

So, what unmixed stock you are, and what nobility,

Towering at the summit of glory and noble deeds!

Our bounty drains the morning rainclouds, and praise of us

Is sung by riders atop their riding camels.

I am the king who enriches and bestows, before whom

The noble lords of kings have bowed low.

My station has risen above the valiant one of the two Simak stars,

And my fingertips have shamed the most bountiful clouds.

And I am surely a burden that foes cannot bear,

Even if they could bear the loftiest mountains.

Ask the people of the two tribes, Maʿadd and Yaʿrub,

And the dwellers of the desert regions and strongholds:

So is there a king like me who gives generously, unasked,

And thrusts sidelong into the backs of squadrons?

And has my Indian blade blamed my hand in battle?

And have my sword-belts ever hung slack upon me?

So my protégé is the star's neighbor in glory and security,

And he who reproaches the sea of surging waves reproaches me.
