صُنpreserve بعضَهُsome of it فوراكfor behind you الأوطانُthe homelands
Will you squander all your tears if they depart?
Should all your tears run dry as they appear
Save some of them, for the homelands lie behind you.
Conceal some for the homeland dear
حَقّthe claim الديارof the dwellings كحقِّlike the claim of منthose عاشرتَهُمyou lived with
فيهاin them كذاthus حكَمتruled بهon it الفتيانُthe young men
The dwellings have a claim like that of those you lived with
The right to home like friends met there
in them; thus have the young men ruled on the matter.
So judged are the gallant and sincere

لاno عارshame أنthat يستسقيasks for water الظمآنُthe thirsty one
Ask me: I shall acquaint you with love and its conditions.
Ask me, I'll tell you of love and its ways
There is no shame in the thirsty asking for water.
No shame when thirsty drink and graze

عمداًdeliberately وأنأىand farther away منهمُthan they are السلوانُforgetfulness
I pretend to have forgotten the beloved if they go far away,
Reveal gently to loved ones though far
deliberately—yet forgetfulness is farther from me than they.
Whether absent intentionally or afar
غالطتُI misled عاذلتيthe woman who reproached me بذاكwith that ولمand did not يزَلcease
ليI have فيin مُغالطةِmisleading العواذلreproachful women شانُa knack
I misled the woman who reproached me with that, and have always
I teased my critic though not to blame
had a knack for misleading reproachful women.
Accusing lovers I frequently tame

And part of my affliction is that concealing love
A problem that love I do conceal
is my habit, even if concealment destroys me.
Though concealment does my being seal

And a fickle woman I befriended: the benefit of her giving
A songbird accustomed to sing its song
is evil, and the harm of her withholding is public disclosure.
Cruel its silence though booming its gong

انّfor المجانةَwantonness عندهاwith her مجَّانُfree of charge
Madness has settled upon her lover's heart,
Madness paused at the gardens of its love
for wantonness with her is free of charge.
Free wine flows in abundance thereof

I wooed her before dawn and told her, “Cast your spell;
At night I told her "Cast your spell"
how often the gazelles have bewitched me!
With magic and rhyme she does so well

مسلولةٌdrawn أجفانهاtheir sheaths الأجفانُthe eyelids
The wide-eyed ones of the thicket—their eyes are swords,
Eyes of doe, sharp piercing sight
drawn, whose sheaths are eyelids.
With loose lids shielding inner light

So turn to the chancery of your compassion and sign:
Take me to your book of grace, sign thy name
let a safe-conduct be written for us from your eyes.
By your eyes salutation; security's claim

Is it evasion and haughtiness from the beloved,
Safety from the lover - excuse and facade
and threats and humiliation from the watcher?”
Danger from the spy - threat and charade

She smiled, and a tear overtook her;
She smiled though tears began to pour
pearls gleamed, and pearl-drops rained down.
Necklace shimmered, wine did pour

She stood biting her fingers in anger at the slanderers,
She bit her lips to silence the spies
so I trace lines upon my cheek, with tears for fingers.
My cheeks and tears - comparable in size

She laments passionate longing with a long-drawn breath;
Complains of youth with breaths expanding long
the fires themselves lament the ravages of its heat.
Complains of summer heat flaming strong

A heat that, had the polytheists been afflicted with it
A heat - if polytheists had felt its power
in times past, no idols would have been worshipped.
Idols of old wouldn't have tower

How long this forced patience, when farewell is real?
Such patience and farewell in truth abound
And how long this fortitude, when parting is plain to see?
Endurance and separation visually found

And how much the ill-wishers resent separation!
Annoyance of slanderers from intent
They themselves caused the separation—may they be no more!
They were the cause; innocence they bent

And dear ones to whose love I once pledged allegiance:
Brothers I thought they were in days of yore
for that, all of them pledged allegiance to loving me.
In hardship, brothers are seen no more

I was the one they would ransom, among them and in their esteem;
My tears flow whether they fulfill or forget
their oaths were sworn by the life of my head.
Yearning remains if they shepherd or beset

Then the enemies spread slanders between us,
I care not for days that neglect me outright
until we grew estranged: I departed, and they departed.
Or time that darkness does invite

The distance widened; remembrance is their share
Like waves succeeding waves never tiring
from me, and my share from them is forgetfulness.
Loss of company still inspiring

Claims of brotherhood founded on hope are many;
My state seen by oppressor's claws
but it is in adversity that brothers are known.

Tears are faithful, whether they keep faith or break their word,
Shows courage capturing the forbidden game
and longing keeps watch, whether they care for me or betray me.
But from capturing the needy, feels shame

I have no power over the days if they are miserly,
The rich took from me to rust my traits prime
nor authority over time if they turn away.

Like wave after wave, never subsiding:
Deprived me of wealth, so I deprived in turn
the loss of a companion, followed by another loss.

I profit in a trader's bargain who bought me cheap
by a lion whose like Khaffan does not harbor.

It shows courage in hunting down people of understanding,
One like me frowned upon, yet carries glory
but is cowardly about hunting the destitute.

It stripped me of wealth to make my character rust;
I who ambition of self did impair
how strange of it! Can pure gold rust?
Not worry or sorrow brought my despair

It humiliated me, but the sweetness of musk's scent
Violating dignity failed his cause foretold
increases under grinding, when it is humiliated.
For dignity is cause of causes told

When I was denied wealth through it, I denied it
And Iraq's love for me is easily attained
my praise, so deprivation encompassed us both.
If Oman turns from me disdained

How profitable the bargain of a merchant who buys me!
My days will be brought back from youth long gone
And whoever seeks to sell me incurs the loss.

One like me is treasured, and his prestige is borne
A moon conversing with thoughts in the still of night
willingly upon the pupils of glory, and kept safe.
Honors from a generous king in sight

His noble virtue is unadorned: his means have failed him;
Counsel pleased Buwayhid kings of refined air
for means are the adornment of noble virtue.
Success embodied - faith its soul bare

If command of king had fallen to another spirit
to me if Oman turns against me.
Crowns and thrones would instantly forfeit

You bring hope with your good tidings in store
a noble man of pure lineage, more exalted than kings.
For comprehending wealth galore

A moon, keeping his thoughts company beneath [perhaps darkness],
Days of the king's pride - joyous fare
pure in noble deeds.
