هَلِis ...? البابُthe door مَفروجٌopen فَأنظرso I may look نظرةًa glance
هَلِ البابُ مَفروجٌ فَأنظر نظرةً
بِعينيَwith my eyes أَرضاًa land عزّproved difficult عنديfor me مرامهاreaching it
بِعينيَ أَرضاً عزّ عندي مرامها
Is the door open, that I might cast a glance
Is the door open for me to take a look
with my eyes upon a land so hard for me to reach?
With my eyes at a land whose ambition was too high for me
فَياso, oh! حبّذاhow lovely الدهناal-Dahna وَطيبُand the sweetness تُرابِهاits soil
فَيا حبّذا الدهنا وَطيبُ تُرابِها
وَأَرضٌand a land فضاءٌwide-open يصدحcries out الليلُthe night هامهاits owls
وَأَرضٌ فضاءٌ يصدح الليلُ هامها
Ah, how lovely is al-Dahna, and how sweet its soil,
So beautiful is its sand and soil
and a wide-open land whose owls cry at night.
And a vast land where the night echoes its worries
