قَدindeed كنتُI was أكرهُI hate حجراًHajr أَنto أعيشَI live بِهاin it
وَأَنand to أعيشَI live بِأرضٍin a land ذاتhaving حيطانِwalls
I used to hate living in Hajr,
I used to hate living in a stone house,
and living in a land with walls.
And living in a land with walls.
ياah حبّذاhow lovely الغَرَقُal-Gharaq الأعلىthe upper وساكنهُand its inhabitant
وَماand what تضمّنit contains مِنof ماءٍwater وعيدانِand branches
Ah, how lovely are Upper al-Gharaq and its inhabitant,
How I wish to drown in the highest sea, and dwell there,
and the water and branches it contains!
With all its water and timber!
أَبيتُI spend the night أَرقبُI watch نجمَthe star of اللّيلthe night قاعدةًsitting
حتّىuntil الصباحِmorning وَعندَand at البابthe door عجلانِtwo calves
I spend the night sitting, watching the night's star,
I refused to gaze at the night star while sitting,
until morning, with two calves at the door.
Until the morn, with sparrows at my door.
لَولاwere it not for مخافةُfear of ربّيmy Lord أَنthat يُعاقِبنيHe would punish me
لَقَدsurely دَعوتI prayed عَلىagainst الشيخِthe old man اِبنson of حيّانِHayyan
Were it not for fear that my Lord would punish me,
Had I no fear of my Lord punishing me,
I would surely have cursed the old man Ibn Hayyan.
I would have cursed Ibn Hayyan, that old man!
