بَينَamong القواضِبِthe cleaving swords والقناand the spears الخَطّارِswaying
بَينَ القواضِبِ والقنا الخَطّارِ
And one marked for death falls headlong
And one destined for death rides its deterrence
Among the cleaving swords and swaying spears.
Between the narrow boats and the perilous canal
يَدنوdraws near وَتَرفَعُهُand lift him الرِماحُthe spears كأَنَّهُas though he were
يَدنو وَتَرفَعُهُ الرِماحُ كأَنَّهُ

شُلوٌ تَنشَّبَ في مَخالِبِ ضارِ
He draws near, and the spears lift him, as though he were
He approaches and the spears raise him as though he were
A corpse caught in a predator’s claws.
A stubborn thorn stuck in the claws of harm
فَثَوىso he lay صَريعاًslain وَالرِياحُand the winds تَنوشُهُpluck at him
فَثَوى صَريعاً وَالرِياحُ تَنوشُهُ
إِنَّindeed الشَراةَthe Shurāt قَصيرَةُshort الأَعمارِthe lifespans
إِنَّ الشَراةَ قَصيرَةُ الأَعمارِ
So he lay slain, and the winds plucked at him.
So he fell dead while the winds console him
Indeed, the Shurāt have short lives.
Indeed the evil-doers have short lives

Learned men—whenever you come to them, orators,
Orators whether you came to them as speakers
Pledged to confront every vast battalion.
The brave ones of every battalion of warriors
