إِنthough تَكُwere خَيليmy horses يَومَon the day of تَكريتَTikrit أَحجَمَتdrew back
وَقُتِّلَand were killed فُرسانيmy horsemen فَماso I was not كُنتُI was وانِياslow to act
Though my horses drew back on the day of Tikrit,
and my horsemen were killed, I was no laggard.
وَماand I was not كُنتُI was وَقَّافاًone who stood idle وَلَكِنbut مُبارِزاًone who fought
أُقاتِلُهُمI fight them وَحديalone فُرادىsingly وَثانِياand two at a time
I did not stand idle; I went out to fight,
fighting them alone, singly and two at a time.
دَعانيhe called me الفَتىthe young man الأَسدِيُّthe Asadi عَمرُوAmr بنُson of جُندَبٍJundab
فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him لَبَّيكَhere I am لَمّاwhen دَعانِياhe called me
The Asadi youth, Amr ibn Jundab, called to me,
and when he called, I answered him, “Here I am.”
وَأُقسِمُand I swear لَوif فُودِيتُهُI could ransom him لَفَدَيتُهُI would surely ransom him
بِأَهليwith my family وَماand all that جَمَّعتُI had gathered كَهلاًold وَناشِياand young
I swear, if ransom could have saved him, I would have ransomed him
with my family and all I had gathered, old and young.

وَخُلِّفتَwhile you were left فيamong القَتلىthe slain بِتَكريتَat Tikrit ثاوِياlying there
It grieves Ibn al-Hurr to have returned
while you were left lying among the slain at Tikrit.
لَعَمريby my life لَقَدindeed طاعَنتُI thrust my spear دونَكَin your defense بِالقَناwith spears
وَجالَدتُهُمand I fought them hand to hand لَوif only أَنَّthere were لِلحَتفِagainst death واقِياa protection
By my life, I thrust my spear in your defense,
and fought them hand to hand—if only death could be warded off.
لَعَمريby my life لَقَدindeed آسَيتَنيyou stood by me حينَwhen أَدبَرواthey turned away
وَماand I remained زِلتُI remained مَحمودَpraised اللِّقاءِin battle مُواسِياstanding by others
By my life, you stood by me when they turned away,
and I remained steadfast in battle, standing by others.
وَماand it was not كانَit was ظَنِّيmy expectation إِذas أُقاتِلُI fought دونَهُمon their behalf
عَدُوَّهُمُtheir enemy أَلاthat they would not يَكونواthey would be وَرائِياbehind me
When I fought their enemy on their behalf, I never thought
that they would fail to stand behind me.
أَلاah لَيتَwould that شِعريI knew هَلwhether أَرىI shall see بَعدَماafter what أَرىI see
جَماعَةَthe gathering of قَوميmy people نصرَةًas supporters وَالمَوالِياand the allies
Would that I knew, after all I have seen, whether I shall see
my people gathered in support, with the allies.
وَهَلand shall I urge on أَزجُرَنin Kufa بِالكوفَةِthe horses الخَيلَlean ones looked on as fit for battle? no, lean ones شُزَّباًlean
ضَوامِرَgaunt ones تَرديcharging بِالكُماةِwith armored warriors عَوادِياrushing forward
And shall I urge on lean horses at Kufa,
gaunt steeds charging with armored warriors,
فَأَلقىso I meet عَلَيهاon them مُصعَباًMus'ab وَجُنودَهُand his soldiers
فَأَقتُلُso I kill أَعدائيmy enemies وَأدرِكُand claim ثارِياmy vengeance
to meet Mus'ab and his soldiers on their backs,
and kill my enemies and claim my vengeance?
