    The drunken men of Umayya spend the night asleep,

    while at al-Taff lie slain men whose loved ones do not sleep.

    None but a tribe has brought Islam to ruin,

    whose fools assumed command and whose luxury endured.

    إِذا اِعوَجَّ مِنها جانِبٌ لا يُقيمُها

    And religion's spear-shaft has come into a tyrant's palm;

    when one side of it grows crooked, he does not straighten it.

    So I swore: my eye shall never cease to be sorrowful,

    and my eye weeps, its flowing tears never drying,

    all my life—or until Umayya encounters disgrace,

    by which all its people are humbled until death.
