فَياSo, oh لَكfor you حَسرَةًregret ماas long as دُمتُI remain حَيّاًalive
تُرَدِّدُkeeps echoing بَينَbetween حَلقيmy throat وَالتَراقيand the collarbones
Oh, what regret, for as long as I live,
echoing between my throat and collarbones—
حُسينٌHusayn حينَwhen يَطلُبُhe asks for بَذلَthe giving of نَصريmy aid
عَلىagainst أَهلِthe people of العَداوَةِenmity وَالشَقاقِand discord
for Husayn, when he asked me to give my aid
against the people of enmity and discord.
وَلَوAnd if أَنّيthat I أُواسيهِI support him بِنَفسيwith my own life
I would surely have gained كَرامَةًhonor يَومَon the day of التَلاقيmeeting
And had I supported him with my own life,
I would have gained honor on the Day of Meeting,
مَعwith اِبنِthe son of المُصطَفىthe Chosen One نَفسيmy soul فداهُhis ransom
فَياSo, oh للَّهِto God مِنof أَلَمِthe pain of الفراقِparting
with the son of the Chosen One—may my soul be his ransom!
So, O God, what pain there is in parting!
فَماAnd not أَنسىI forget غَداةَthe morning when يَقولُhe says حزناًin sorrow
أَتَترُكُنيWill you abandon me وَتَزمَعُand you resolve لانطِلاقِto depart
And I cannot forget the morning he said in sorrow:
“Will you abandon me and resolve to depart?”
فَلَوFor if فَلَقَsplit التَلَهُّفُanguished regret قَلبَthe heart of حَيٍّa living person
لَهَمَّwould surely be on the verge القَلبُthe heart مِنّيof mine بِانفِلاقِof splitting apart
For if anguish could split a living heart,
my own heart would surely be on the verge of splitting.
فَقَدFor indeed فازَtriumphed الأُلىthose who نَصرواaided حُسَيناًHusayn
وَخابَand failed الآخَرونَthe others أُولوpossessors of النِّفاقَhypocrisy
For those who aided Husayn have indeed triumphed,
and the others, the hypocrites, have failed.
