I say to him, “Patience, ʿAṭiyy—for it is only

prison, until God makes a way out.”

I see that fate has two days for me: one when I am banished,

a fugitive, and another when I am crowned among kings.

Do you impugn my faith on the morning I came to you,

while for faith’s sake you draw al-Bāhilī and Ḥashraj close?

Have you not seen how kingship’s face has been marred,

and the nabʿ trees of God’s lands have turned to boxthorn?
