Convey a message to the Commander of the Faithful.

For I hold no shameful opinion that I disguise.

Is it just that I be shunned, and that Mus'ab appoint

as his two ministers those I once fought for his sake?

How, then, when I have rendered you the due of my pledge of allegiance,

while my due is withheld by you, though I demand it?

And I gave you wealth, the like of which is squandered,

and aided you when the undertaking's stages were hard.

Then, when kingship shone forth and the foes submitted,

and the choicest riches of Iraq were secured,

Mus'ab turned away from me; had it been someone else,

he would receive no reproach from me over what lay between us.

Indeed, what has troubled me about Mus'ab is that Mus'ab

is, I see, the companion of every man who is false to us.

Nor, if you drive me away, will I come to drink

from turbid water whose drinker has choked on it.

So if Abbad is at a loss about me, then I—

I am the man whose paths never leave him at a loss.

And a man has nothing but what God brings

to him, and what his scribe has inscribed in the records.

When I stand at the gate, Muslim is admitted,

while his doorkeeper bars me from entering the gate.
