يَقولُsays أَميرٌa commander غادِرٌtreacherous جِدُّutterly غادِرٍtreacherous
أَلاwhy not? كُنتَyou had قاتَلتَfought الشَّهيدَthe martyr اِبنَson of فاطِمَهFatimah
A treacherous commander, utterly treacherous, says:
A treacherous prince of the treacherous says:
“Why did you not fight the martyr, Fatimah's son?”
If only you had killed the martyred son of Fatimah,
وَنَفسيand my soul عَلىfor خذلانِهِabandoning him وَاِعتِزالِهِand withdrawing from him
وَبَيعَةِand pledging allegiance to هَذاthis الناكِثِbreaker of العَهدthe covenant لائِمَهreproachful
And my soul, for abandoning him and withdrawing from him,
And my soul is anguished at his abandonment and seclusion,
and pledging allegiance to this covenant-breaker, reproaches me.
And the pledge of allegiance to this covenant-breaking blamer.
فَواso, alas! نَدَميmy regret أَلاthat not أَكونَI should be نَصَرتُهُI aided him
أَلاindeed كُلُّevery نَفسٍsoul لاnot تُسَدَّدُis guided aright نادِمَهremorseful
Oh, how I regret not having come to his aid!
Oh how I regret that I did not support him!
Indeed, every soul not guided aright is remorseful.
Every soul filled with regret did not guide it.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لأَنّيbecause I لَمdid not أَكُنI was مِنamong حُماتِهِhis defenders

And I, because I was not among his defenders,
I wish I was among his defenders,
truly bear a lasting grief that never leaves me.
Full of sorrow that does not leave its companion.
سَقىmay water اللَّهُGod أَرواحَthe souls of الَّذينَthose who تَأَزَّرواgirded themselves
عَلىfor نَصرِهِaiding him سُقياa watering مِنَfrom الغَيثِrain دائِمَهunceasing
May God water the souls of those who girded themselves
May God water the souls of those who donned
to aid him, with everlasting showers of rain.
His support with continuous rainwater.
وَقَفتُI stood عَلىat أَجداثِهِمtheir graves وَمَجالِهِمand their battlefield
فَكادَthen almost الحَشاthe heart يَنقَضُّbreaks apart وَالعَينُand the eye ساجِمَهstreaming with tears
I stood at their graves and where they had fought;
I stood at their graves and places,
then my heart almost burst, and my eye streamed with tears.
The eyes almost bursting and the tears flowing.
لَعَمريby my life لَقَدindeed كانواthey were مَصاليتَdauntless warriors فيin الوَغىbattle

By my life, they were indeed dauntless warriors in battle,
By my life, they were in battle my aid,
swift into the fray, great-hearted defenders.
Quickly rushing to the fray, protectors with shining swords.
تَآسَواsupported one another عَلىin نَصرِaiding اِبنِthe son of بِنتِthe daughter of نَبِيِّهِمtheir Prophet

بِأَسيافِهِمwith their swords آسادَlions of غيلٍa thicket ضَراغِمَهfierce lions
They supported one another in aiding the son of their Prophet's daughter,
They aided the son of the Prophet's daughter
with their swords—lions of the thicket, fierce lions.
With their swords, lions in fierce attacks.
فَإِنfor if يُقتَلواthey are slain فَكُلُّthen every نَفسٍsoul تَقِيَّةٍdevout

For if they are slain, then every devout soul
If they are killed, every cautious soul
on earth has fallen silent with grief because of that.
On earth has become, for that, tearful.
وَماand not إِنemphatic particle رَأىsaw الراؤونَthe beholders أَفضَلَbetter مِنهُمthan them

And no beholder has ever seen anyone better than them
None who saw them at death
in the face of death—lords, radiant men, mighty chiefs.
Were nobler than them, a blossoming society.
أَتَقتُلُهُمdo you kill them? ظُلماًunjustly وَتَرجوand you hope for وِدادَناour affection

Do you kill them unjustly and hope for our affection?
You kill them unjustly and still desire our affection!
So abandon a course that is not acceptable to us.
Leave off a plan that does not suit us.
لَعَمريby my life لَقَدindeed راغَمتُمُوناyou have affronted us بِقَتلِهِمby killing them

By my life, you have indeed affronted us by killing them.
By my life, you have opposed us by killing them,
So many men and women among us bear you a grudge!
So many resentful ones among us resentful.
أَهمُّI intend مراراًrepeatedly أَنto أَسيرَI march بِجَحفَلٍwith a vast army

Time and again I intend to march with a vast army
I am bitter to march in an army
toward an unjust faction that has strayed from the truth.
To a group that deviated from truth unjustly.
فَكُفّواso desist وَإِلاor else زُرتُكُمI shall visit you فيamong كَتائِبٍbattalions

So desist, or else I shall visit you amid battalions
Refrain, or I will visit you in battalions
fiercer against you than the advancing hosts of the Daylamites.
More severe upon you than charging horses.
