وماand there is no لكَfor you عنaway from لَيلىLayla المَليحَةِthe lovely منany صَبرِpatience
Will you forsake Layla? No—there is no blessing in forsaking her.
Shall I abandon Layla, no, never!
And you have no patience away from lovely Layla.
What patience have you against beautiful Layla?
تُسائِلُyou ask عَنabout ليلىLayla التيwhom لوif لَقِيتُهاI met her
بخلوَةِin seclusion ماwhat lies بينَbetween البَنِيَّةِthe Kaaba والسِّترِand the curtain
You ask about Layla, whom, if I met
I ask about Layla, whom if I met
in seclusion between the Kaaba and the curtain,
In privacy between the tents and veils
لمِلتُI would surely lean عَلَىupon لَيلىLayla بِنَفسِيَwith my own self مَيلَةًa leaning
وَإِنand even if كانَit were أَيّامthe days of التَذابحِsacrificial slaughter والعَشرِand the ten days
I would lean upon Layla with my whole being,
I would incline to Layla with my soul
even if it were the days of sacrificial slaughter and the ten days.
Though it be the days of slaughter and pilgrimage
فَهلdoes then يَمقتنيdetest me اللَّهGod فيfor أنthat ذكرتُهاI mentioned her
وعللتُand I entertained أَصحابيmy companions بِهاwith talk of her ليلةَon the night of النَّحرِthe sacrifice
Does God, then, detest me for mentioning her
Shall God despise me, that I remember her
and entertaining my companions with talk of her on the night of sacrifice?
And tell my friends of her on the night of immolation
