All day you are distracted from showing affection,

and you sleep through your night, heedless of our love.

Your warm embrace has not held me at night,

as though even meeting me were a burden to you.

Where are the nights when you were their light?

They have gone, as though I were mired in their darkness.

My sorrow for the days of youth, my sweet one,

when there was adornment and bountiful affection.

Despite beauty, its loveliness has not quenched my thirst,

and life flows on, and charms fade.

Return to my heart like a young girl, and drink your fill,

for longing is a spring, a watering place if you thirst.

    فأنا لودّك لو عَرفت المنحلُ

    Honey for your yearning, if you were given a taste of my springs;

for I am the apiary for your love, if you but knew.

How happy the moments when his eyes

shoot arrows at my heart and slay me.

Return, for estrangement has dried my heart,

and patience recoils from the desertion of loved ones.

    كيف التصبّر والنوى لا يعقلُ

    The measure overflows if you leave for a moment;

how can I be patient when separation knows no reason?

Your stubbornness would be sweeter if it were for pleasure

between me and you—doing it brings no shame.

For God's sake, hasten to our meeting, rejoicing,

for your coldness leaves me sick and restless.

Hold my limbs close, warming them with longing,

for the cold penetrates deeply when feelings are weak.

You owe me an answer, for I am

a husband, and my heart hopes for your affection.

    تعلو ولكنْ دفؤها لا ينزلُ

    Do not leave me waiting for the winter sun;

it rises, but its warmth does not descend.

Nothing distracts a husband who loves his wife

except death, for it grants no respite.

Know this: if turning away from love persists,

the heart's core, even if you own it, will depart.

An affliction has knelt upon my soul because of your rejection,

and my head is set ablaze with exultant gray hair.

And I left her, ailing, but she

returned, her eyes streaming in apology.

She returned, calling me to a healing love,

with sorrow within her and remorse tormenting her.

    فالعمرُ ضاع ومن عزوفك مُمْحِلُ

    No, I will not return to your love, forgiving you;

for life has been wasted and made barren by your aversion.

Return to your amusements; our reunion has come too late,

for I am laid low by death's sword because of you.
