My beloved, I have so much...

to say; I have so much...

Where, my precious one, do I begin?

And everything in you is a prince—a prince.

O you, who turn my letters,

through what they hold, into cocoons of silk.

These are my songs, and this is for

this little book to enfold us both.

Tomorrow, when you turn its pages,

and a lamp yearns, and a bed sings,

and letters grow green with their longing,

    and commas almost take flight,

then do not say: “Oh, this young man!

He told the bend and the pool about me,

and the almond trees, and the tulips—so much so that

the world goes along with me whenever I walk.

And he said what he said, so there is no star

without some of my fragrance upon it.

Tomorrow, people will see me in his poetry:

a wine-red mouth and short hair.”

Leave people's tales aside; you will not become

great except through my great love.

What would the earth become if we did not exist?

If your eyes did not exist... what would it become?
