I spread my eyelashes over your pure soil.

So, O Damascus, why do we begin with reproach?

You are my beloved; recline like a song

Upon my arm, and do not ask the reason.

You are all women; there is no woman

I have loved after you without thinking her a lie.

    فمسحي عن جبيني الحزن والتعبا

    O Damascus, my wounds have no shores;

So wipe sadness and weariness from my brow.

And bring me back to the walls of my school,

And bring back the ink, the chalk, and the books.

Those alleys—how many a treasure I buried there,

And how many memories of youth I left upon them.

And how many pictures I drew on their walls,

And how many toys I broke upon their steps.

I came from the womb of sorrows, O my homeland,

Kissing the earth, the doors, and the shooting stars.

    My love is here, and my beloveds were born here;

So who will give me back the years that have gone?

I am an entire tribe of lovers,

And with my tears I watered the sea and the clouds.

So I turned every willow into a woman,

And studded every minaret with gold.

These gardens were among my belongings

When I left al-Fayha to live abroad.

So there is no shirt I wear

Without finding grapes upon its threads.

How many a sailor has the cares of land dwelling within him,

And how many flee love's decree, yet never escape.

O Damascus, where are Muawiya's two eyes,

And where are those whose shoulders jostled the shooting stars?

For the horses of the Banu Hamdan no longer dance

With pride, nor does al-Mutanabbi fill Aleppo.

And we touch Khalid's tomb in Homs,

So the tomb trembles in anger at its visitors.

Oh, how many a living man has a tomb's marble for his dwelling,

And how many a dead man has stood upright upon his feet.

O son of al-Walid, have you no sword to rent out?

For all our swords have turned to wood.

Damascus, O treasure of my dreams and my fan,

Shall I complain of Arabism, or complain to you of the Arabs?

The whips of June bloodied their backs,

So they grew addicted to them, and kissed the hand of the one who struck them.

And they read the history books, and were convinced.

When did rifles ever dwell in books?

They watered Palestine with colorful dreams,

And fed her foolish talk and speeches.

And left Jerusalem naked upon the mud,

Offering the honor of her breasts to whoever wished.

Is there a letter from Palestine to reassure me

About the one I wrote to, who has not written back?

And about lemon orchards, and about a dream

That grows farther from me each time it draws near.

O Palestine, who will give you a lily?

And who will restore to you the house that fell into ruin?

You wandered upon the pavement of tears, searching

For tenderness, but you found no father.

Look around: you will find us in our debauchery,

Those who worship sex, or those who worship gold.

For one, prosperity has blinded his insight,

So he bowed and gave the beautiful women all he earned.

And one bathes in seas of oil,

He tired of sackcloth as a garment, so he donned fine cloth.

And one is narcissistic in his innermost nature,

And one has drunk of the blood of the free.

If those who slaughtered history are my kin

Throughout the ages, then I reject that lineage.

O Damascus, O Damascus, there is no delight in my quiver.

I ask poetry's pardon for its begging for delight.

What shall I recite from my poetry and my writings?

The hooves of horses have trampled literature among us,

And besieged us and hurt us; no pen

Has spoken the truth without being assassinated or crucified.

O you who reproach a slaughtered man for his blood

And his artery's bleeding—how easy reproach is!

Whoever has experienced cauterization does not forget its pains,

And whoever has seen poison does not suffer like one who drank it.

    The rope of tragedy is wound around my neck;

Who would reproach a hanged man when he writhes?

Poetry is not doves we send flying

    Toward the sky, nor a flute and an east wind;

But it is anger whose claws have grown long.

How cowardly poetry is if it does not ride anger!
