قالَتshe said أَأُدانيكَshall I draw near you? وَعَنّيand from me تَنأىyou draw away
قالَت أَأُدانيكَ وَعَنّي تَنأى
لاmay ... not ساغَgo down easily لَكَfor you الماءُthe water وَنَفسيwhile my soul ظَمأىthirsty
لا ساغَ لَكَ الماءُ وَنَفسي ظَمأى
She said, “Shall I draw near you while you draw away from me?
She said, "Do you spurn me and keep your distance?
May water never go down easily for you while my soul is thirsty.
Water is not sweet for you while I thirst.
مُذsince غِبتَyou went away عَنِof المُدامِthe wine كأسيmy cup صَفَرَتbecame empty
مُذ غِبتَ عَنِ المُدامِ كأسي صَفَرَت
لَكِنَّbut زُجاجِيَّةَglass vessel عَينيmy eye ملأىfull
لَكِنَّ زُجاجِيَّةَ عَيني ملأى
Since you went away, my cup has been empty of wine,
Since you've been away from my wine cup, it has yellowed,
but the glass vessel of my eye is full.”
But my glassy eyes are filled."
