لَم أَنسَ وَقَد تناجَتِ الأَحداقُ

وَالنُطقُ يَحول دونَهُ الإِشفاقُ

I have not forgotten how the eyes whispered to one another,

I have not forgotten when eyes conversed

while apprehension stood in the way of speech.

And shyness hindered speech

وَلّى وَبِلَحظِ عينه خاطَبَني

وَلّى وَبِلَحظِ عينه خاطَبَني

بالسَيفِ كَذا يُخاطَبُ العشّاقُ

بالسَيفِ كَذا يُخاطَبُ العشّاقُ

He turned away and addressed me with a glance of his eye—

Yet with a glance of his eye he addressed me

with the sword: thus are lovers addressed.
