كَمhow often قُلتُI said وَكالماءِand like water صَفاءًin clarity رَشأيmy gazelle
كَم قُلتُ وَكالماءِ صَفاءً رَشأي
ماءٌwater هوَhe وَاللَهِby God فَلاso do not تَتَّكئِlean
ماءٌ هوَ وَاللَهِ فَلا تَتَّكئِ
How often I have said, with my gazelle as clear as water:
How often I have spoken as clear as water flows
He is water, by God, so do not lean on him.
Yet it is but water, do not rely
لاnot يُمسِكُهُholds him الكَفُّthe hand إِذاwhen فُزتُI won بِهِwith him
لا يُمسِكُهُ الكَفُّ إِذا فُزتُ بِهِ
لاnot رويتُهُI gave him drink فَقَطonly يَشفىis quenched ظَمئيmy thirst
لا رويتُهُ فَقَط يَشفى ظَمئي
The hand cannot hold him when I win him.
No hand can hold it if I grasp to take
I have not given him drink; only my thirst is quenched.
I drink to quench my thirst, it will not stay
