How often I have said, as the gray dove’s lament rose,
How often have I pleaded, while the bending boughs
Seeking sympathy from a branch of a leaning bān tree:
Of the willow tree implored a crooked branch to bow.
ياO وَيليَwoe to me إِنif عجزتُI am unable عَنto do ذاكthat وَلَمand did not

Woe to me if I cannot do that and do not
Oh how I wish, were I unable to plead so,
Win the sympathy of the one whose love has stirred my affliction!
I could implore one whose love has left me frail.
