كَم ناوَلَني الرِضابَ من غَير حَرَد
From the opening of a mouth that reveals honey and hailstones,
From the cleft of a mouth that shows you honey and hail,
how often he gave me its sweet nectar without reluctance!
How often he offered me sweet saliva without anger!
فالآنbut now وَقَدand already أَلِفتُI have grown attached كالظَبيlike a gazelle شَرَدhe fled
فالآن وَقَد أَلِفتُ كالظَبي شَرَد

But now, once I had grown intimate with him, he bolted like a gazelle;
But now that I have grown attached, he has fled like a gazelle.
were my reflection to appear to him in the water, he would flee.
If my reflection appeared to him in the water, he would drive it away.
