ياO طولَthe length of تَحيُّريmy bewilderment وَهَمّيand my worry ضَجَراin distress
يا طولَ تَحيُّري وَهَمّي ضَجَرا
إِذwhen بانَhe departed وَماand not قَضيتI satisfied منهfrom him الوَطَراthe desire
إِذ بانَ وَما قَضيت منه الوَطَرا
Ah, how prolonged my bewilderment and my care, weary with anguish!
Oh, how long my bewilderment and worry endure in distress,
When he departed before I had fulfilled my longing for him.
since he departed before I had satisfied my longing for him!
لَوif آذنhe gave notice بِالوَداعof farewell وَالبينُand parting دَناdrew near
لَو آذن بِالوَداع وَالبينُ دَنا
أَشبَعتُI sated وَلاand not أَكادI almost منهfrom him النَظَراthe gaze
أَشبَعتُ وَلا أَكاد منه النَظَرا
Had he announced his farewell as separation drew near,
Had he given notice of farewell as parting drew near,
I would have feasted my gaze upon him—though I could never have had my fill.
I would have feasted my eyes on him—though I could scarcely have my fill.
