بمفضال به الرحمن انعمْ

بمفضال به الرحمن انعمْ

The region of Beirut boasted and gloried

in a generous benefactor bestowed by the Merciful.

همامٌ اشرق الديوان فيه

همامٌ اشرق الديوان فيه

ومنصبهُ السعيد به تفخمْ

ومنصبهُ السعيد به تفخمْ

A noble man through whom the council shone,

and his fortunate office gained grandeur through him.

تجمّعت المحاسن في حسين

تجمّعت المحاسن في حسين

به الخلاَّق للاخلاق تممْ

به الخلاَّق للاخلاق تممْ

All virtues gathered in Hussein;

through him the Creator perfected moral character.

تولى الامر عمّن فاق طامي

تولى الامر عمّن فاق طامي

عميم نوالهِ البحر العرمرمْ

عميم نوالهِ البحر العرمرمْ

He assumed command from one whose overflowing,

all-embracing bounty surpassed the mighty sea.

وزيرٌ ظافرٌ فيه تجلّت

وزيرٌ ظافرٌ فيه تجلّت

صفات سميه ذاك المعظّمْ

صفات سميه ذاك المعظّمْ

A victorious vizier, in whom shone forth

the qualities of his namesake, that exalted one—

سليمان الذي في العصر أحيى

سليمان الذي في العصر أحيى

بحكمة حكمه العدل المنظمْ

بحكمة حكمه العدل المنظمْ

Suleiman, who in this age revived

well-ordered justice through the wisdom of his rule.

خليفة أحمد الوزراء مولىً

خليفة أحمد الوزراء مولىً

له ذكرٌ ليوم الحشر يُعلَمْ

له ذكرٌ ليوم الحشر يُعلَمْ

Successor to Ahmad, most praised of viziers, a lord

whose renown will be known until the Day of Gathering.

هو المشهور بالجزار ليثٌ

فرى الاعدا بسيف غير مُثلَمْ

فرى الاعدا بسيف غير مُثلَمْ

He is famed as al-Jazzar, a lion

who cleaved his foes with an unnotched sword.

وذكر فعاله في الحي حيٌّ

وذكر فعاله في الحي حيٌّ

يعطّر من شذاه كل معلمْ

يعطّر من شذاه كل معلمْ

And the memory of his deeds lives on among the people,

perfuming every landmark with its fragrance.

ناى عن نعم أشبال وأبقى

ناى عن نعم أشبال وأبقى

لنا من كل ذي رأي محكمْ

لنا من كل ذي رأي محكمْ

He departed, leaving fine lion cubs behind

for us—each endowed with well-founded judgment,

وذي بطش إذا ما ثار يوما

وذي بطش إذا ما ثار يوما

عجاج النقع للاناف ارغمْ

عجاج النقع للاناف ارغمْ

and men of might who, if one day there rose

the swirling dust of battle, ground proud noses in the dust.

احرّ ولاة أحكام أقاموا

احرّ ولاة أحكام أقاموا

شراع الآمن والإيمان معصمْ

شراع الآمن والإيمان معصمْ

The noblest governors of justice raised

the sail of safety and faith as a refuge.

نمى بحسينهم عدلٌ فأضحى

نمى بحسينهم عدلٌ فأضحى

سعيداً من إلى ناديه يمَّمْ

سعيداً من إلى ناديه يمَّمْ

Through their Hussein justice grew, and so became

happy whoever made for his assembly.

زهت بيروت حسناً حيث أنشي

زهت بيروت حسناً حيث أنشي

بها قصراً من الأنوار مفعمْ

بها قصراً من الأنوار مفعمْ

Beirut shone with beauty when he built

within it a palace brimming with lights.

تسامى في البهاء فأرخوه

تسامى في البهاء فأرخوه

حوى فخراً على الإيوان محكمْ

حوى فخراً على الإيوان محكمْ

It soared in splendor, so date it:

A solidly built palace won glory over the iwan.
