O seeker of the truth in reports,

and of judgment on the nature of plague:

    plague is a sticky poison,

    clinging, penetrating, piercing.

It spreads through bodies as oil spreads

when it permeates wool or cotton.

For people, it is not a matter of corrupted air [wording unclear],

and it increases as human beings move about.

Hence it spreads in the spring season,

and summer's scorching heat surely drives it away.

In winter, intense cold conceals it,

and, if it appears, prevents its spread.

The nature of this intractable illness,

    this deadly, murderous affliction,

    وليس فيما قلتهُ من لبسِ

    is to infect bodies through touch;

there is no ambiguity in what I have said.

    فسمُّها النفّاذ لمساً يبلي

    It has no effect through smell;

its penetrating poison ravages through touch.

After it infects and spreads through the body,

churning the humors as milk is churned,

it appears in the body when it shudders,

at one thin-skinned site or more.

Its eruption, perhaps in the armpits,

appears after the churning and turmoil,

or perhaps behind the sufferer's ear,

or in the tender areas of the hips.

    If its eruption appears red,

feel safe; fear it if it appears green.

Some have said of this affliction

that it is like a spear's piercing thrust.

And the word 'ṭāʿūn,' plague, is a word

    whose Arabic pattern is fāʿūl.

The more numerous its eruptions become

in the body, the less its toxicity.

    ومفرد الطعنات فيه الوهمُ

    With many, safety may be hoped for;

a solitary lesion gives cause for fear,

especially if no bursting open is seen

    or no dripping sweat appears.

Then there is no doubt that it

has sunk into the entrails: despair of safety from it.

    As for this disease, everyone

has been baffled and worn out seeking its cure.

So they agreed in counsel about it and resolved

to withdraw if it ever struck a place.

If an objector says, 'Whoever flees

sins, for flight from it has been forbidden,'

reject this and say: Glory be to Him! The Lord on high

has said, 'Do not cast yourselves by your own hands into...'

Know—may God guide you—O son of affection,

and listen attentively to this sound guidance:

if plague strikes a land, depart,

or seclude yourself behind a locked door.

After locking the door to keep yourself hidden,

be vigilant, guard yourself, and seek divine reward.

If you wish to attend to its regimen,

    store there everything you need:

every item that needs to be stored,

supplies of fatty substances or oil,

such as wax, then animal fat, then oil,

and every sweet thing the household needs,

    refined sugar, molasses, and honey,

and anything sweet-tasting that can be had.

    Acquire spices with wafting fragrances,

    and sought-after, fragrant saffron.

The chief things that harm you, O man,

are wool, then cotton and linen,

and hair, then hide, then feathers:

    through each this disturbance spreads.

    Rope, threads, and paper—

    the poison penetrates them all.

Then raw silk and bundled silk,

and its loose and twisted varieties.

    Take plenty of vinegar, for it is the mainstay;

everyone has concerned themselves with it during plague.

    اياك تستولي عليك الغفلَهْ

    Have everything ready before locking up;

    beware lest heedlessness overcome you.

Obtain razors for shaving the head,

so you may remain at ease, without anxiety.

Take shredded tobacco in an amount

sufficient for smoking throughout your seclusion.

    Bring in every suspect thing,

such as anything soft, sticky, or downy.

Tin the copper before locking up,

for it cannot be taken in without vinegar.

Beware of finding yourself in need after seclusion

of anything we have mentioned in this account.

For this seclusion, make of iron

a long rod with a forked head,

and also long tongs that will prove

useful for picking up what you wish from afar.

    Acquire two earthenware vessels,

and place them behind the house door.

Fill them both with clean, pure water

each day when you wake early.

Use one to receive all the greens,

and the other for meat, for fear of its rank smell.

Immerse the meat in hot water,

and shake it vigorously in the water.

Clean it on the surface of a board,

using the tip of the tongs, patiently.

    Likewise, clean the vegetables attentively

of any hair, rag, or tuft of cotton.

If a note arrives from outside,

take it following this guide's example:

    extend long, well-made tongs,

and pick it up with a straight, firm grip.

Immerse it in strong, sharp vinegar,

so its whole bulk is submerged in vinegar.

Beware lest any side of it remain

unimmersed, and so you meet with ruin.

    A circulating dirham of gold

or silver—take it with good vinegar.

Anything other than a written note, meat, greens,

or a dirham, never accept, for fear of danger.

Every day, early, when you wake,

sweep the house's floors: you may suspect

a feather, rag, or tuft of cotton

has been thrown in at night by a mischief-maker,

or dropped by a bird that had soiled

    or touched a plague-stricken person's clothing.

If you see anything like this, pick it up

with tongs and drop it outside.

As for bread, O friend, after baking,

never take it hot: it brings harm.

    فإن تجده فاتراً لا تقنعْ

    Leave it at the door until it grows cold;

if you find it lukewarm, do not be satisfied.

Then make a point of turning each piece over,

checking for a harmful hair or a deadly thread.

    Beware of bringing in flowers altogether;

no kind of flower is to be admitted.

    Beware of mice, and fear the cat;

do not admit it if it comes from outside.

For this creature's love of food

compels it to roam among houses,

and its habit is to roll upon bedding.

Beware likewise of every kind of wild animal.

Make your clotheslines for the washing

solely of palm fronds, my friend,

for fear of that sparrow which

alights in every enclosure to feed.

For every creature with a body and breath of life,

this poison spreads through it upon contact.

But have no fear of earth, stones, or wood,

for everything dry is safe from harm.

    After completing this regimen,

    keeping secluded throughout the plague,

and observing the necessary precautions which

have been laid down, O companion in faith,

entrust the whole affair to the All-Merciful,

with a sincere servant's surrender, in my verses.

    Know that nothing ever appears

except by God's leave, so beware of ignorance.

Treasure the meanings of this rajaz poem,

for how much hidden wisdom it contains!

    Al-Turk, its composer, asks pardon,

for he was not equal to composing it [wording unclear].
