Had you not been the finest companions—I trust

Their pledges, and my expectations of them prove true—

And guardians of affection, sincere in love

For friends, never failing them or fawning on them,

Masters of good manners, each of you

Sweet, refined, and delightful by nature,

I would not have voiced blame, nor would

My pen have spoken and uttered reproach against you.

Had you considered the plight of the dullard

To whom you handed arrows so that he might shoot,

You would have excused one reproaching you out of love,

Who composed a rebuke, not an anger-stirring lampoon.

Does your friend discern, from urging you,

Anything but that I have come to steal from you,

Or that what I hold for you is wasted,

Indeed, effaced at the bottom of an engulfing sea?

This is what appeared to me through signs

And evidence that confirms these matters for me.

    Yet what I witnessed

At your hands would never befall anyone else,

For that is not among your virtues, nor

In your nature, nor a trait ingrained in you.

Rather, this has arisen from my ill fortune,

And fortune is the most desirable, most favorable thing sought.

Do not suppose I coveted anything from you,

Or that fawning is one of my traits.

No, by the sanctity of life! That is not in me, nor

Does it knock at my mind's door, even in a dream.

And I could never accept anything you

Doubt, even were I on the verge of choking.

Rather, my pure affection prompted me

To compose condolences for you and adorn them,

And lament with you, mourning the loss of one

For whom grief clings to me, just as it does to you.

    For in love we are all one heart;

By God, nothing between us divides us.

And since by nature I do not

Befriend the harsh, but love and adore the gentle,

I first offered you, from my heart's treasure,

The fairest pearls, shining like radiant stars.

If that reproach from me has hurt you,

And your heart is shaken and uneasy,

    Then I—by life's serenity—bear you affection,

Purer and clearer than limpid water,

Steadfast in keeping the pledges; and for you I have

A sorrowful heart, love-stricken and yearning.

And the carpet of that reproach between us

Is folded away, and that poem torn apart.

And reproach between dear friends is a pinch of salt:

Through it, affection's flavor grows richer and more piquant.

If the tear I made in the garment of love

Is plain to you, then it falls to me to mend it.

Or if it came from you, then to you I am

A forgiving friend: the door of my reproach is closed.

And I wish, if I have committed an offense

Against you, that you grant forgiveness and show kindness.

And throughout all time, you shall have my acclaim,

And praise and faithful, most fitting commendation,

With the finest greeting and an excellent salutation,

Whose fragrance grows sweeter among humankind and spreads.
