You are the guarantor of justice and reform,

And your great achievement is witness and proof.

O talk of reform, how often you have beguiled us!

And in you lies hope, yet you remain beyond reach.

So it is like the phoenix and the faithful friend—

If you wish, add alchemy and the ghoul.

Hopes have never ceased to be directed toward it,

And procrastination and excuses hold them back.

Until the ministry's elder came forward to act

For its cause, and what was hoped for came true.

My lord, behold all humankind gazing intently,

Listening, while everyone's neck stretches high.

We gesture toward you, pointing with our fingertips,

To leave no room for distortion or misconstrual.

Who but Midhat undertakes great deeds?

For without Midhat there is no way to that end.

You have shone in our lands, my lord,

As a full moon—may no setting ever befall it!

And you have lodged in the governor's residence, yet

You are a guest lodged only in our hearts.

Beirut smiled upon you as she welcomed you,

And on her lips: 'God is greatest!' and 'There is no god but God!'

    وبمدح مدحت يحسن الترتيلُ

    And she appeared chanting your praises, then broke into song;

And chanting becomes beautiful through praise of Midhat.

She hopes for success, as though you had become the soul

Of her being, and a crown upon her head.

    أنت الطيب وذي الديار عليلُ

    My lord, this land hopes for your kindness;

You are the physician, and these lands are ailing.

O savior of the cherished homeland through your resolve,

At a time when the ignorant had come to run rampant there.

You are the one who built on the horizon of greatness

A lofty glory beyond all reach.

    فلديكمُ كل الكثير قليلُ

    For the Fundamental Law was your handiwork;

So all that is great is little in your eyes.

    Likewise, all praise falls short,

And even lengthy speech falls short in describing you.

    Thus al-Naqqash, your servant, seeks

Pardon—and pardon from the powerful is beautiful.
